BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Thomas Vanek scored the decisive shootout goal and Ryan Miller stopped four of five chances to cap the Buffalo Sabres' come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
Drew Stafford and Clarke MacArthur scored in regulation in helping Buffalo improve to 5-0-1.
After Stafford and Boston's David Krejci traded shootout goals, Vanek scored with a nifty move. Driving to the net, he faked a shot and let the puck float at his skates for a second, before beating Manny Fernandez on the glove side.
The game ended when Marc Savard failed on his attempt to force a sixth round of the shootout when the puck rolled off his stick while making a move in front of Miller.
Dennis Wideman and Phil Kessel scored in regulation for the Bruins, who were coming off a 2-1 shootout loss against Pittsburgh on Monday.
Miller, who improved to 4-0 on the season, stopped 30 shots through 65 minutes, and keeping the Sabres in a game in which they were outplayed in the early going.
With 27 seconds left in overtime, Miller reached back with his stick to stop Marco Sturm's attempt to get around the goalie on the short side. Midway through the third period, Miller made a big glove save, snapping his arm up in time to rob Krejci's attempt to convert a rebound from the right circle.
Early in the second period, Miller made his most acrobatic save by first stopping Kessel's shot from the right circle and then diving back across the crease and getting his stick down to block Savard's chance from in close. A minute later, Miller kicked out his right pad to foil Blake Wheeler's shot from the slot.
The Sabres were outshot 14-2 when Wideman scored 11 minutes in. The defenseman got to a loose puck in the high slot and snapped a shot through a crowd that sneaked in inside the left post.
Kessel then scored a power-play goal - the first Buffalo allowed in 27 penalty kills - on a transition rush. Set up by Milan Lucic atop the right circle, Kessel took a few steps in and snapped a low shot off the left post eight minutes into the second period.
After MaCarthur scored late in the second period, Stafford tied it six minutes into the third. Getting the puck on the left wing, Stafford faked driving inside and instead drove deep to get around Wideman, before cutting to the net and beating Fernandez on the glove side.
