WASHINGTON (AP) - In a game between last-place teams, the Boston Bruins had the better sense of desperation.

The Bruins rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period and won on Brad Stuart's goal 2:02 into overtime Tuesday night for a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals.

``We're at this point right now where we have to get it going,'' said Sergei Samsonov, who scored the tying goal with 7:14 remaining in regulation. ``There's nothing really than can discourage us anymore. We're a desperate team, and I think we kind of showed that desperation tonight.''

Washington rookie Alexander Ovechkin's 21st goal gave the Capitals a 3-1 lead with 8:13 remaining in the third period, but the Bruins capitalized on turnovers to rally for two goals in the next 59 seconds. Quick puck movement around the crease set up Marco Sturm's 11th goal, and Samsonov got his 15th by skating to the front of the crease and deking Olie Kolzig before going to his backhand for the point-blank shot.

The Bruins dominated overtime, outshooting the Capitals 3-0 in the extra period and 43-18 for the game. Stuart took a pass from Patrice Bergeron and put a one-timer to Kolzig's glove side to give Boston only its third win in eight games.

The victory gives the Bruins a good start to a three-game road trip before playing 10 of 14 at home in January.

``We're behind the 8-ball here,'' said Glen Murray, who scored in the second period. ``We need to win games. It's going to be our season, the month of January, all those games at home. Any win right now is a big win.''

For the Capitals, the loss was bigger than most. They have been targeting Boston as a team to catch in the Eastern Conference standings, but they were outplayed for the most of the game - yet still managed to take a lead that they couldn't hold. Kolzig had many tough stops in his 39 saves, the only reason the game was as close as it was.

``As far as losing in overtime, we didn't deserve to be there,'' coach Glen Hanlon said. ``I've never seen so many good saves in a game in my life by a goalie. They beat us at our game, and our game is outworking teams and directing pucks to the net and they did a good job at that. That's the hard part to swallow.''

Captain Jeff Halpern was even more blunt.

``Olie played so well,'' Halpern said. ``We sold him out.''

Mathieu Biron and Chris Clark scored in the second period for the Capitals, who failed to complete their first three-game winning streak of the season. Biron, who has spent much of the season as a healthy scratch, has power-play goals in three consecutive games.

Notes: Kolzig had a special interest in the Capitals' charity drive for the evening. More than $12,000 was raised from ticket proceeds and a silent auction, including $3,600 for a pair of Ovechkin's skates, on Autism Awareness Night. Kolzig's son, Carson, is autistic. ... Capitals D Brendan Witt played in his 600th NHL game, all with the Capitals. ... Washington fell to 7-0-2 when leading after two periods. Boston improved to 2-9 when trailing after 40 minutes. ... Washington was held to fewer than 20 shots for the sixth time this season.
