New York Rangers 2, Boston Bruins 5 FINAL

Tuesday, 06.19.2012 / 2:28 AM

Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) -- Sergei Samsonov scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Boston Bruins past the New York Rangers 5-2 Monday afternoon for their sixth win in seven games.

The Bruins scored twice in the opening 5:14, improving to 7-1-1-0 since Jan. 1 and 5-0-1-0 in their last six home games.

Joe Thornton put Boston ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal 2:03 into the first period, burying a rebound for his 11th of the season. The Bruins pushed their lead to 2-0 just 3:11 later. Brian Rolston took a feed from Nick Boynton at center ice for a breakaway and scored his 13th goal of the season on a backhanded flip after faking out Mike Dunham.

Glen Murray put Boston ahead 3-0 in the second period with a wrister from the circle.

Things got ugly following Murray's goal, as the teams combined for 44 penalty minutes during a 2:29 stretch midway through the second. Eric Lindros knocked Thornton out of the game with a right upper cut that lacerated his face, and Boston's Doug Doull received a game misconduct for charging at Petr Nedved. Boston's Dan McGillis also was sent off for kneeing Darius Kasparaitis.

Chris Simon got New York on the board later in the second, but Samsonov answered with his 10th goal of the season 2:04 later.

Jiri Slegr, in his first game for the Bruins since being acquired from Vancouver on Saturday, picked up a goal in the third. Lindros completed the scoring with his 10th of the season with 9:10 left.

Andrew Raycroft made 34 saves for Boston, the 19th time in 29 complete games this season in which he's allowed two goals or fewer.

Notes: Boston killed off a five-minute Rangers power play in the second period that included a 3:49 stretch in which New York was on a five-on-three. ... Before the game, the Bruins honored Willie O'Ree, who became the first black player in NHL history when he suited up for Boston on Jan. 18, 1958. ... The Bruins and Rangers wore vintage jerseys from the 1970s for the game. ... Rangers center Mark Messier, who turned 43 on Sunday, is tied for sixth in the NHL with three short-handed goals.
