NEW YORK (AP) -- Somehow Mike Dunham kept Patrice Bergeron from putting the tying goal into the New York Rangers' net.
Bobby Holik and Petr Nedved each scored twice, but it is my Dunham's key stop in the final minute that preserved the Rangers' 4-2 victory Monday night over the Boston Bruins.
Holik's empty-net goal at 19:14 of the third period sealed the victory. Just before, Dunham made a lunging toe stop to deny Bergeron's attempt at the tying goal. Bergeron fired at a seemingly open net from the slot.
"It's frustrating to lose this game," the 18-year-old Bergeron said. "The puck was right there but it wouldn't go in."
Even Dunham wasn't certain why it didn't find the net.
"I'm not sure if it was my toe or the outside of my pad," Dunham said. "It hit some part in that area. I was lucky."
The Rangers improved to 8-5-2-2 at home and are 3-3 in their last six overall.
"It was good," Rangers coach Glen Sather said. "Dunham made a couple of great saves. Petr scored a couple of great goals. We got a good effort from a lot of guys tonight. We knew they'd be a desperate hockey team. It was a tough game."
Boston has just one win in 10 games (1-5-4) and two in the last 15 games (2-7-5-1).
"Our go-to guys seem to be having trouble finding the back of the net right now," Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said. "We had some great opportunities to score. We've just got to keep going to the net and putting the puck toward the net to get some ugly ones here and build some momentum."
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead at 5:54 of the first period on a power-play goal by Bergeron, his seventh. Joe Thornton blasted a shot from the slot that Dunham stopped, but Bergeron converted the rebound from just to the right of the goal crease. The assist was Thornton's 25th of the season.
"I went to the front of the net and I was trying to get a rebound," Bergeron said.
Holik's eighth goal at 10:52 tied it 1-1 after a wild scramble around the Boston net.
Darius Kasparaitis took a low screen shot that bounced off the right post through Andrew Raycroft's legs and out in front of the net. Holik dived across the crease to lift the puck over Raycroft's pad just as the net was being dislodged. A video replay showed the puck crossed the line before the net was off the post.
"The win was very important," Holik said. "We don't have time to lose a point here and there. We have to win."
New York went ahead 2-1 on Nedved's eighth at 12:38. With the Rangers on a power play, Nedved took a pass from Boris Mironov in the right circle and let go a hard wrist shot that beat Raycroft high to the stick side.
Kasparaitis set up Nedved's ninth at 1:26 of the second period with a perfect cross-ice pass from the left point to the right circle. Nedved shot as he circled, and the puck glanced off Raycroft's shoulder into the net.
"This was a big win for us," Nedved said. "We didn't want to give this team any confidence. We wanted to have a good start, which we did and we had some really good chances. They struck first but we came back with three goals and brought it back."
P.J. Axelsson pulled Boston within 3-2 at 16:08 with a brilliant offensive move for his third goal. Axelsson took a pass at center ice from Bergeron, split the Rangers defense, and beat Dunham high on the stick side.
