MONTREAL (AP) -- The Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens played old-time hockey that did justice to their retro uniforms.

Brian Rolston scored for the second straight game and Andrew Raycroft made 28 saves as Boston skated to a 1-1 tie with Montreal on Tuesday night.

With the longtime rivals sporting vintage jerseys, Rolston -- who had an assist and a short-handed goal in Saturday's 3-2 win in Ottawa -- scored his 12th of the season in the second, tying the game shortly after Montreal opened the scoring midway through the period.

"It's always a tough game when you come in here," Rolston said. "With the rivalry that we have, and we played in the playoffs a couple of years ago, so you know it's going to be a tough game and you've got to battle for your points every night."

Boston, which ended a five-game winless streak Saturday, has tied four of its last six games (1-1-4).

"It's tough to win in this league when you don't have goaltending that's going to give you that timely save when you need it, and (Raycroft) certainly did that tonight," Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said.

Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore made 30 saves, and Craig Rivet scored for Montreal, which has earned points in eight of its last 10 games (5-2-3).

Theodore made a sensational save to preserve the tie at the end of the second period. The Canadiens goalie was already down on the ice when he spun around to make a backhanded stop on a shot by Bruins defenseman Sean O'Donnell.

Boston left wing Michal Grosek was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct when he checked Montreal defenseman Francis Bouillon into the boards from behind 43 seconds into the third.

Theodore got a roughing penalty at 3:35 of the third when he shoved Patrice Bergeron to the ice from behind after the Bruins rookie crashed into him, knocking the net off and sending Theodore's mask flying.

"He got pushed by our defenseman but he still put his gloves up and he hit me in the face, that's why I lost my mask," Theodore said. "I thought he had two minutes for sure, but talking to (referee Kerry) Fraser, he said he didn't really see it."

Canadiens coach Claude Julien was particularly frustrated that no penalty was called on Bergeron, who was checked by Rivet as he drove to the net.

"I'm getting sick and tired of seeing those things happening," Canadiens coach Claude Julien said. "Something has to be done, he's too good of a player to have people run into him. ... We've got to protect our goaltenders."

The Bruins wore two different sweaters during the game because of a delay in receiving the vintage jerseys they were scheduled to wear.

Boston began the game with its current black uniform, switching to its retro jerseys from the late 1960's and early 1970's after the first period.

"Maybe after missing the first period, they didn't get too wet," Rolston said. "I like the jerseys, if that means anything. It's fun being part of an 'Original Six' organization and playing in games like that."

The Canadiens wore vintage jerseys from the 1945-46 season, the team's short-lived first version of a white sweater.

The Bruins came close to scoring early in the second but Bouillon and center Mike Ribeiro sprawled across the goal line to help Theodore keep a loose puck from crossing the line.

Montreal opened the scoring 10:08 into the period on Rivet's second goal of the season.

Michael Ryder left a drop pass in the Bruins' zone for Bouillon, who wristed a shot toward the net as Rivet cut across the goalmouth. Rivet stuck his stick out and made contact with the puck in the air, deflecting the shot over Raycroft's right shoulder into the net.

Rolston drew Boston even 1:53 later off a redirected shot. Bruins defenseman Hal Gill's point shot struck Bouillon's skate and bounced to Rolston, who beat Theodore for his 12th goal of the season.
