DECEMBER

1924 - Bruins play the first game in their history, winning a 2-1 decision over the Montreal Maroons. Fred Harris scores the first goal in Bruins history from Carson Cooper. The first goal against is by Charlie Dinsmore.

1935 - The Bruins play the first Sunday game in their history, as Tiny Thompson makes 28 saves in a 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers.

1938 - Frank Brimsek plays his first game as a Bruin, replacing the legendary Tiny Thompson in goal. He drops a 2-0 decision at the Montreal Canadiens, but goes on to establish a club-record 231:54 scoreless streak spanning five games, including three consecutive shutouts.  [Back]


1967 - In a 4-4 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks, John Bucyk scores two goals, the 230th and 231st of his Bruins career, to become the club’s all-time career goal leader. Bucyk ends his Boston career with 545 career goals, a club record that still stands.  [Back]


1949 - In ceremonies prior to a 5-3 Boston win over the Chicago Blackhawks, Bruins General Manager Art Ross is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He is presented with a silver tray by the NHL and a silver service by the Gallery Gods.

1987 - Phil Esposito’s number seven is honored and a banner is raised to the Boston Garden rafters in an emotional pre-game ceremony that saw Ray Bourque remove his number seven jersey, displaying a number 77 jersey that he would wear from that game on, and present it to Esposito. The Bruins defeat the New York Rangers, 4-3, in the game.  [Back]


1986 - Ray Bourque had two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal at 19:59 of the third period, in a 3-2 victory over the Quebec Nordiques. Quebec coach Michel Bergeron and Nordiques goalie Clint Malarchuk earned gross misconducts at the conclusion of the game for protesting that the winning goal had been scored after time had expired.

1998 -  The Bruins suffer their worst home loss of the season as they drop a 9-3 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks with Chicago’s Michael Nylander scoring four goals.

2001 -  Bill Guerin scores twice in 18 seconds of the third period as the Bruins win at the Atlanta Thrashers by a 3-2 score.

1959 -  In a 6-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Boston, Chicago’s Bobby Hull scores the first hat trick of his career. [Back]


1967 -  John Bucyk scores twice in a 3-1 win over the New York Rangers. They are the 575th and 576th points of his Boston career as he passes Milt Schmidt to become the club’s all-time scoring leader. He would extend that record to 1,339 career points as a Bruin, a record that stood until Feb. 1, 1997 when Ray Bourque overtook the all-time point record. [Back]

1931  -  Boston drops a 3-2 decision to the New York Americans, snapping their 19-0-5 home unbeaten streak (spanning two seasons). It was their first home loss since Nov. 25, 1930 (a 4-3 overtime loss to Chicago). Boston President Charles Adams filed a protest to the NHL after the game, claiming the Americans’ defensive style of play provided “a dull spectacle for the hockey fans in Boston”.

1987  - 
In a 5-2 loss to Philadelphia, Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall scores an empty net goal at 18:48 of the third period.

2001 -  Brian Rolston scores two shorthanded goals in a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. [Back]


1941  -  In the first home game following the declaration of World War II, Boston Garden is blacked out during the Star Spangled Banner with a spotlight on the flag. The game is interrupted for 45 minutes during the second intermission for the broadcast of President Roosevelt’s first wartime radio speech.

1992  -  Boston’s Gordie Roberts becomes the first U.S.-born player to play his 1,000th NHL game in a 5-2 loss at the Buffalo Sabres. [Back]

1970  -  John Bucyk has two goals and four assists in an 8-2 Boston win over the Buffalo Sabres while playing in his 1,000th NHL game. The Bruins have 72 shots on goal in the game, the third-highest single game total by a team in NHL history.   [Back]

1934 -  The Bruins start the custom of a pre-game meal with the hockey writers prior to a 4-3 win over the New York Americans. The general managers and coaches of both teams meet with the writers at Boston’s Hotel Manger prior to the game.

1980-  - 
Boston’s Brad Park becomes just the second defenseman in NHL history to record 500 career assists in a 5-3 loss to the Quebec Nordiques.

2003  - 
Boston loses a 6-5 decision at Washington Capitals as the teams combine for three goals in a 1:16 span of the third period (Washington, 18:36 ENG; Boston, 18:58 & 19:52). [Back]


1933  - In a 4-1 Toronto win at Boston Garden, Eddie Shore charged Toronto’s Ace Bailey, knocking him to the ice where he went into convulsions. Toronto’s Red Horner retaliated against Shore and both Shore and Bailey were carried to their dressing rooms. Shore suffered a concussion and took seven stitches to the back of his head. Bailey, who did not regain consciousness until he was in the dressing room, was taken to Audobon Hospital where he was in critical condition with a fractured skull. Bailey was transferred to Boston City Hospital, where he underwent brain surgeries on Dec. 14 and Dec. 17 and remained in the hospital for two months. Shore and Horner were suspended indefinitely, with Shore later levied a 16-game suspension, the longest ever to an NHL player at the time. Toronto General Manager Conn Smythe was charged with assault for an altercation with a fan as he tried to leave the ice, with the charges later dismissed.

1942  -  The Bruins defeat the Montreal Canadiens by a 3-2 score at Boston Garden in the first matinee in their history. During the first intermission, the first public demonstration of a blood donation took place as a Boston debutante gave blood while a Red Cross employee explained the process to encourage volunteer donors. The game’s proceeds of $6286 were donated to the American Red Cross. [Back]


1927  - In a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers, the Rangers score all three goals on the power play as the Bruins played shorthanded for 17 minutes in the second period.
 
1932 -
In a 5-1 Boston win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston coach Art Ross and Toronto player King Clancy get in a fight at the Boston bench. Players from both teams join in, then the police, then spectators. No penalties were assessed.

1938 -  Frank Brimsek’s team record shutout streak is snapped at 231:54 when Montreal’s Herb Cain scores at 19:14 of the second period. The Bruins defeat the Canadiens in the game, 3-2.

1973 -  Phil Esposito has two goals in a 4-2 Boston win over the Minnesota North Stars. He reaches the 30-goal mark in just his 26th game, then the fastest 30 goals in NHL history.

1990 - Craig Janney and Ray Bourque have four assists each in an 8-2 Boston victory over the Hartford Whalers. Boston’s Lyndon Byers leaves the bench during a third period altercation, earning an automatic ten-game suspension for himself and an automatic five-game suspension for coach Mike Milbury. [Back]

1972  - Phil Esposito has 15 of Boston’s 55 shots on goal in a 4-2 Bruins victory over the New York Rangers.
 
1974 -
The Bruins score five goals each in the first and third periods in a 12-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

1995 -  Adam Oates ties a club record with four goals in a 6-4 Boston win over the Florida Panthers. [Back]

1925  - Babe Ruth is in attendance at Boston Arena as the Bruins drop a 2-1 decision to the Ottawa Senators. He visits the dressing room after the game to meet the team.
 
1993 -
Glen Wesley becomes only the third defenseman in team history (Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque) to record a hat trick with three goals in a 5-4 win at the New Jersey Devils. It is the first hat trick by a Bruins defenseman since Bourque did the trick on Mar. 8, 1983). [Back]

1926  - Boston has five goals disallowed, including one in overtime, in a 2-2  tie at the Montreal Canadiens. [Back]

1999  -  Ray Bourque records his 1,100th NHL/Bruins assist in a 3-1 win at the Atlanta Thrashers.

2005  - 
The Calgary Flames scored all three of their goals in a 1:51 span of the first period (3:05, 3:56 & 4:56) and Mikka Kiprusoff makes 26 saves in a 3-0 loss in Calgary. [Back]


1960  -  In a 4-2 Boston loss to the Montreal Canadiens, Bruin Don McKenney misses the game with an ankle injury, snapping his consecutive-games played streak at 266 dating back to Jan. 27, 1957. [Back]


1939  -  In a 3-2 Boston win over the Maple Leafs, Toronto General Manager Conn Smythe balances on top of the boards while protesting a call and topples backward onto a female fan's lap.

1945  - 
Frank Brimsek plays his first game since returning from war duty, an 8-7 victory over the New York Rangers.

1954  - 
Milt Schmidt plays the final game of his Hall-of-Fame career, a 6-1 loss at the Chicago Blackhawks. He is then named the Bruins coach, replacing Lynn Patrick behind the bench on Dec. 25th.

1974  - 
In an 11-3 Boston victory over the New York Rangers, Phil Esposito ties a club record for points In a game with a three-goal, four-assist performance. The Bruins set a club record for fastest five goals, scoring five times in a 2:55 span of the first (Bobby Schmautz, 19:13) and second (Ken Hodge, 0:18; Phil Esposito, 0:43; Don Marcotte, 0:58; John Bucyk, 2:08) periods. It is the third-fastest five goals scored in NHL history.

1987  - 
In a 7-5 loss to the Blues, Boston and St. Louis combine for the fastest two goals in NHL history with two strikes in 0:02 of the third period. Boston's Ken Linseman scores at 19:50 and St. Louis' Doug Gilmour counters at 19:52.

1998  -
Ray Bourque records three assists in a 4-1 win over Detroit and moves into third place on the NHL's all-time assist list with his 1,052nd career assist.

2006  - 
Patrice Bergeron registers five assists, Marc Savard has two goals and two assists and Marco Sturm records his second career hat trick as the Bruins defeat the Ottawa Senators, 7-2. [Back]


1932  -  In a 2-1 Boston win over the Ottawa Senators, Orville Heximer scores the game-winning goal from behind the net, flipping the puck over the goal and off Ottawa goalie Bill Beveridge into the net.

1969  - 
Bobby Orr has five assists in a 6-4 victory at Pittsburgh.

1990  - 
Boston goalie Reggie Lemelin earns his 200th NHL win with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars.

2007  - 
After the Pittsburgh Penguins open up a 4-0 lead, the Bruins rally to tie the game at 4-4 through overtime before the Penguins prevail in a shootout. [Back]


2000  -  Byron Dafoe makes 23 saves and Brian Rolston has a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

2002  -  The Florida Panthers score twice in the final minute of regulation play to earn a 3-3 tie in Boston.

2006  -  Tim Thomas makes 39 saves as the Bruins shutout the Vancouver Canucks by a 2-0 score, despite Boston taking no shots in the third period. [Back]

1974  -  Phil Esposito scores his 500th NHL goal with a two-goal effort in a 5-4 Boston win over the Detroit Red Wings. [Back]


1981  -  Barry Pederson ties a club record for assists in a game by a rookie with four in a 7-4 Boston victory at the Washington Capitals. [Back]


1930  -  Near the end of an 8-0 Boston win over the Philadelphia Quakers, a bench-clearing brawl erupted which required seven policemen to come onto the ice to break it up.

1938  -  Frank Brimsek has his shutout streak snapped at 220:24 when the New York Rangers' Phil Watson scores the game's only goal at 5:09 of the second period. It is only the third goal Brimsek allowed in 493:40 of play, spanning eight games and including six shutouts.

1939  -  In a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, the Kraut Line combines for nine points behind Woody Dumart's hat trick, Bobby Bauer's three assists and Milt Schmidt's two goals and one assist.

1954  -  Milt Schmidt coaches his first Boston game, a 3-3 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks. [Back]


2003  -  The Tampa Bay Lightning score three shorthanded goals in a 4-2 win over Boston in Tampa Bay.


1937  -  During a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers, a thief went into the Rangers' dressing room and stole all of the New York players' money.

2001  -  Glen Murray has two goals and three assists and Joe Thornton has five assists in a 7-1 Boston win at the Florida Panthers.

2007  -  Carolina's Chad LaRose scores on a shorthanded penalty shot vs. Tim Thomas in a 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes. [Back]

1973  -  Chris Oddleifson ties a club record with four goals in an 8-1 win at the California Seals. It is also a team record for most goals in a game by a rookie.

1978  -  Gerry Cheever's 16-game unbeaten streak is snapped at 12-0-4 with a 6-1 loss at the Montreal Canadiens. [Back]

1938  -  The Bruins lose in overtime at the New York Rangers by a 2-1 score. It snaps their overtime unbeaten streak at 9-0-29 dating back to Dec. 30, 1934.

1978  -  Wayne Cashman scores three goals in a 7-3 Boston victory at the Buffalo Sabres.

1993  -  The Bruins drop a 4-3 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers in a ‘neutral site' game played at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN.

2007  -  Dennis Wideman scores the 18,000th goal in Bruins franchise history on Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen. Brothers Mark (Boston) and Colin (Atlanta) Stuart each score goals in the game with Mark's goal proving the game-winner in the 5-2 Boston victory. [Back]
