Mayor Marty Walsh Kicks-Off Volunteer Event at TD Garden By Participating In First-Ever Backpack Stuff-A-Thon Challenge!

WHO:
Mayor Martin J. Walsh, City of Boston
Charlie Jacobs Principal, Delaware North Companies and Boston Bruins
Amy Latimer President, TD Garden
Major Ivan Rock General Secretary, The Salvation Army of MA

WHEN: Tuesday, August 12 at 11:00 AM TD Garden arena floor
WHAT: Garden Neighborhood Charities, The Salvation Army and the City of Boston are teaming up for the third year to help kick-off the school season in style for over 4,000 Boston area students in-need.

Mayor Marty Walsh will join volunteers from TD Garden, Boston Bruins, Massachusetts Sportservice, The Salvation Army and City of Boston on August 12 at 11 AM to kick-off the event with the inaugural Backpack Stuff-A-Thon Challenge. Mayor Walsh will team up with Delaware North Companies and Boston Bruins Principal Charlie Jacobs to complete a timed-series of challenges created to fill backpacks, but also to demonstrate the three main goals of the Back-to-School Celebration prepare students in-need with supplies and confidence for a successful school year, promote regular physical activity and reinforce healthy nutrition and wellness habits.

Due to the major renovation project taking place at TD Garden, these backpacks filled through the Backpack Stuff-A-Thon Challenge will be distributed at the Back-to-School Celebration on Thursday, August 28 at The Salvation Armys Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Boston, located at 650 Dudley Street. At the Kroc Center pre-registered students and their families will receive the supplies needed for the upcoming school year, have access to educational resources, health and fitness tips, and the opportunity to participate in sports and recreational activities.

WHY: This initiative was created three years ago based on studies showing that children who do not have new school supplies at the beginning of the academic year often skip the first several important weeks of class because they are embarrassed and believe that they dont fit in with their peers. To curb this trend, Garden Neighborhood Charities, the philanthropic arm of TD Garden, has donated almost $100,000 combined with the support provided by the Boston Bruins Foundation and Massachusetts Sportservice over the past three years and, thanks to the collaborative efforts of The Salvation Army and City of Boston, donations, volunteers and educational resources have continued to increase year upon year.

For families interested in registering for a backpack through the Back-to-School Celebration initiative, please visit your local Salvation Army Community Center or www.salvationarmyma.org/backtoschool  by August 26, while supplies last.
