Patrice Bergeron will be honored at this year\'s \'The Tradition\' on September 17th

BOSTON, MA – The Sports Museum announced today, July 17, that Patrice Bergeron will be one of the honorees at this year’s ‘The Tradition’ on Wednesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m. on the arena floor at TD Garden. Bergeron will be the recipient of The Tradition's Community Service Award.

The reigning NHL Foundation Award winner for applying "the core values of ice hockey—commitment, perseverance and teamwork—to enrich the lives of people in his community”, Bergeron’s charitable contributions away from TD Garden have been consistent since joining the Bruins as an 18-year-old in 2003.

The Bruins Alternate Captain has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors over the years, including the development of his "Patrice’s Pals" program, which brings patients from local hospitals and other children’s organizations to TD Garden to experience a Bruins home game. Children invited to the game watch the Bruins play in the official Patrice’s Pals luxury suite and meet Bergeron postgame where he signs autographs and takes pictures.

To date, children from Children's Hospital Boston, the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer, Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Franciscan Hospital for Children, Joslin Diabetes Center, Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Big Brother and Big Sister of Massachusetts Bay, Oak Square YMCA, Shriners Hospital, The Jimmy Fund, Home for Little Wanderers, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, among many others, have all participated in the Patrice's Pals program.

Bergeron has also taken a leadership role in many of the organization's charitable initiatives, such as the Holiday Toy Shopping and Toy Delivery events, and makes personal visits to hospitals in the Greater Boston Area. He was also recognized by the NHL as the 2013 King Clancy Trophy winner, which is awarded annually to an NHL player who best exemplifies leadership qualities both on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.

On the ice, Bergeron's career accolades include a 2011 Stanley Cup Championship, two Olympic Gold Medals in 2010 and 2014 and two Selke trophies in 2012 and 2014. He will also be on the cover of EA Sports’ NHL ’15 video game. In 659 career NHL regular season games - all with Boston - the 28-year-old has tallied 183 goals, 312 assists for 495 points and a cumulative +108 rating. The centerman has also appeared in 95 postseason games with 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points and a +30 rating.

Bergeron was drafted by the Bruins in the second round (45th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Last year, Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork received The Tradition's Community Service Award.

Other honorees at this year's Tradition - which is the 13th in the event's history - include New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, local Olympic gold medalist and World Judo Champion Kayla Harrison, and Olympic medalist skier Bode Miller.

‘The Tradition’ is the annual fundraising event for The Sports Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution located on levels 5 and 6 of the TD Garden that works extensively with at-risk kids in our community. This event guarantees attendees a once in a lifetime experience by granting the opportunity to mingle with some of New England’s most legendary athletes and industry leaders during the welcoming gala reception, which begins at 5:30 PM on the arena floor. Each ticket also includes access to premium food and beverage and a seat at the awards ceremony, where fans share in the career highlights and accomplishments of each honoree as they are introduced on stage and welcomed into The Sports Museum’s ‘Tradition Class of 2014’. The presenting sponsor of The Tradition is New Balance Athletic Shoe in association with NESN and the TD Garden.

Tickets are on sale now. Reserved seating is $300 and general admission is $200, with several group sponsorship packages also available for those interested.
