Corey Potter Joins Bruins, Ready to Help Wherever He\u2019s Needed

BostonBruins.com - The past three days have been nothing short of a whirlwind for defenseman Corey Potter.

On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers placed him on waivers. On Wednesday, he found out that he had a new home: Boston.

“That’s obviously a 24-hour period where you hope that you get picked up on waivers,” Potter said after skating with the B’s for the first time in Tampa Bay on Friday afternoon, as the team prepped to face the Lightning on Saturday night. “You know, it’s an exciting feeling, especially coming to the Bruins here.”

“They’re a great organization and they make it to the playoffs pretty much every year, and it’s gonna be a better fit for me, and I’m super excited.”

Potter was greeted by some familiar faces in the B’s dressing room – namely defenseman Torey Krug, a fellow Michigan State Spartan alum, and goaltender Chad Johnson, who he played with as a member of both the Rangers and Coyotes organizations.

“For the most part, hockey guys are always a great bunch of guys, and so far they’ve welcomed me pretty good,” Potter said. “I know Kruger a little bit from Michigan State, and I played with Johnson in the minors a little bit, so a couple of familiar faces around here.”

“It’s been a good couple of days so far.”

The Bruins went into the trade deadline targeting defensive depth, and they succeeded in rounding out a group of eight defensemen, bringing in Potter as well as Andrej Meszaros from Philadelphia in a trade.

As a result, it has created some healthy competition on the roster.

The team had been looking to tighten up defensively over the last several games, and if Thursday’s performance was any indication, they succeeded, posting a shutout against the Caps and allowing just 16 shots on goal.

“I think it was pretty apparent to me [Thursday] that, you know, there’s competition there now,” Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien said on Friday. “And the guys realize it because I think our whole back end really played well [Thursday], all six of them.”

“And those guys that we brought, obviously Corey is a guy that we feel is a good depth guy, and Andrej Meszaros has proven himself to be a pretty decent defenseman in this league, so I think we’re in pretty good shape right now.”

Whether Potter or Meszaros plays against the Lightning on Saturday remains to be seen, but Julien has acknowledged that they will get into the lineup at some point.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen from today till tomorrow, [but] if we’re healthy, then I've got a decision to make,” Julien said after Friday’s skate. “And as I mentioned, our six guys played pretty well [Thursday night], so it might be a little bit tough to take those guys out.

“But at the same time, we’re not going to let [Potter and Meszaros] just sit and not find out what they can give us before we get to the playoffs. So it’s important to look at that aspect as well and make decisions accordingly as you go, game by game.”

Potter said that the abundance of blueliners on the Bruins current roster doesn’t affect his attitude – he’s just excited to be in Black & Gold, and is ready and willing to do whatever job he’s assigned.

“I mean, I’d like to get into some games, but that’s obviously up to the coaching staff,” he said. “And you know, I’m just here for the team and whatever the coaches want from me.”

“So if that means just being a healthy scratch every game and just helping this team work hard in practice, that’s what it is. If I play every game, that’s great, too. So I’m just here to help this team."
