TUUKKA LEADING THE NHL: Entering the weekend, Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask leads all NHL goaltenders in shutouts with five. Rask has allowed two or fewer goals in 24 of his 37 starts this season, yielding a .928 save percentage (tied for fourth in the NHL) and a goals against average of 2.11 (seventh in the NHL). The B’s goaltender has 22 wins so far this season, which ranks fourth in the NHL and is one career win shy of surpassing his career high win total of 22 (2009-10).
BERGERON HOT ON THE DOT: Bruins centerman Patrice Bergeron enters the weekend second in faceoff percentage at 60.3%, behind Vladimir Sobotka (St. Louis) who has been winning puck drops at a 61.8% rate. Bergeron however leads the league in faceoff wins (623), ahead of Sidney Crosby who ranks second with 599 wins.
BACK-TO-BACK: This week the Bruins are playing in their seventh set of back-to-backs this season. The first game will be against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, January 19 and the second against the LA Kings on Monday, January 20. The Bruins play 17 sets of back-to-back games this season and currently have a 6-1-0 record in the first games and 5-2-0 mark in the second games of those series.
LONG TIME COMING: The 2013-14 season is the first season which the Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars faced each other twice since in a season since 2003-04. The B’s won both of the matchups during the 2003-04 season with the first one a 2-0 win on October 15, 2003 and the second a 4-1 win on November 11, 2003.
BRUINS TO PLAY “GOAL BALL” AT PERKINS SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND: On Wednesday, January 22, Jarome Iginla and Reilly Smith will be visiting Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown to play a game of “goal ball” with students. Goal Ball is a team sport geared toward blind athletes in which players roll a bell-embedded ball into the opposing team’s goal. The players will wear colored goggles to prevent them from seeing and will use the sound of the bell to determine where the ball is. They will have to use their bodies, often by lying on their sides on the floor, to prevent the ball from passing them. B’S TO HOST ADM CLINIC WITH MEDFORD YOUTH HOCKEY: Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Spooner will be visiting Simoni Ice Rink in Cambridge, MA on Wednesday, January 22 as the B’s host an American Development Model (ADM) Clinic with Medford Youth Hockey. The ADM is a nationwide model for successfully developing American hockey players. Medford players will take part in small areas games being led by Bruins players. For more information, please see the “Around Town” section of the Week Ahead (players subject to change).
MILLER TO VISIT HALLMARK HEALTH ONCOLOGY AND HEMATOLOGY CENTER: On Thursday, January 23, Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller will be visiting the Hallmark Health Oncology and Hematology Center in Stoneham, MA. During the visit, Miller will visit with adult patients undergoing cancer treatment. For more information, please see the “Around Town” section of the Week Ahead (players subject to change).
JOHNSON TO VISIT WRIGHT SCIENCE AND TECH ACADEMY: On Thursday, January 23, Bruins goalie Chad Johnson will be visiting the Wright Science and Tech Academy in Chelsea, MA. The visit is in support of the Sports Museum’s bullying program, Boston vs. Bullies, which is a program that is taught in inner city schools across Boston. During the visit, Johnson will be participating in a question and answer session with 250 5th and 6th grade students. BEHIND THE B PRESENTED BY ALEX AND ANI: The Boston Bruins announced the remaining air dates for Behind the B presented by Alex and Ani. Episode seven aired on Monday, December 7 and featured the B’s coping with injuries, rehabbing their way back to health, as the team continues to battle. All episodes of Behind the B will air on NESN and can be streamed online at bostonbruins.com/behindtheb. BOSTON BRUINS & SAL’S PIZZA STREET HOCKEY CLINIC: The Bruins and Sal’s Pizza have teamed up to bring the sport of hockey to community centers and other places where children can play in a safe and structured environment. Hockey equipment and instruction are provided for children to learn and enjoy hockey free of charge, while enjoying a Sal’s Pizza party after the clinic. The next clinic will take place on Tuesday, January 21 starting at 3:00 p.m. at John F. Ryan School.
B’S TO HOST CASINO NIGHT: On Saturday, February 1, the B’s will host their annual “Casino Night” at the Westin Boston Waterfront, which will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation. The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (VIP Cocktail Reception 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) and will give fans the opportunity to play at casino tables alongside current and former Bruins players. PUCKS & PUPS 2014 CALENDAR: The Bruins announced the Pucks & Pups 2014 Bruins calendar, which will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation and MSPCA Angell. Pucks & Pups is a unique 2014 calendar featuring Bruins players and management photographed with their pets or with adoptable dogs from the MSPCA. Players featured in the calendar include Johnny Boychuk, Gregory Campbell, Zdeno Chara, Jarome Iginla, Chris Kelly, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Daniel Paille, Tuukka Rask, Dennis Seidenberg, and Shawn Thornton. Bruins Principal Charlie Jacobs, President Cam Neely, General Manager Peter Chiarelli and Head Coach Claude Julien also participated in the project. The calendar features the B’s with their family pets or new friends waiting for homes at the MSPCA. BOSTON BRUINS #40 LICENSE PLATE RAFFLE: One lucky winner will have the opportunity to show off their Boston Bruins pride by cruising the roads of New England with Boston Bruins license plate #40, the same number worn by star goaltender Tuukka Rask. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased through www.bruinsraffles.org and can be attained until February 8, 2014. This raffle will be supporting the Boston Bruins license plate program and by now, you've probably seen a Boston Bruins license plate on the road in Massachusetts. But beyond the fact that the plate looks good, it is also serving a very important purpose - all proceeds from the sale of the "Invest in Youth Hockey" plate go directly to Massachusetts Youth Hockey. In the time that the plates have been on the road, the program has raised over $1 million for grassroots youth hockey efforts throughout the state. Money raised through the "Invest in Youth Hockey" initiative has helped pay for the Border Patrol Program, which directly benefits the youngest skaters.
THIS WEEK’S GAMES: The Bruins will start their two game schedule this week on Sunday, January 19 in a Stanley Cup Final rematch game against the Blackhawks in Chicago at 12:30 p.m. ET at the United Center. The B’s will then finish the second game of the back-to-back set against LA Kings on Martin Luther King Jr. day - Monday, January 20, at the TD Garden at 3:00 p.m. ET.
UPCOMING GAMES BROADCAST SCHEDULE: NBC will televise the Bruins vs. Blackhawks game on Sunday, January 19 with the radio broadcast found on 100.7 WZLX. BRUINS ON THE AIRWAVES: Bruins defenseman Torey Krug has been confirmed as a weekly call-in guest with 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak (Gresh and Zo), which airs weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. General Manager Peter Chiarelli and Johnny Boychuk are expected to be regular guests on 98.5 as well with Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb (Toucher and Rich), which airs weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Call-in days and times are dependent upon the B’s schedule.
189 AND COUNTING: Following Tuesday’s game against the Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins have sold out 189 straight regular season and playoff games. This sellout streak began more than three years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. OFF THE ICE…
PATRICE’S PALS: As a part of his continuing charitable initiative Patrice’s Pals, Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron invites children from local hospitals and other organizations to experience a Bruins home game from his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags filled with Bruins memorabilia, a visit from the Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls, as well as a feature on the Garden HDX. After the game, Patrice’s Pals are escorted to ice level and introduced to Patrice himself who signs autographs and takes pictures with his Pals. This will take place at all Boston Bruins home games during the 2013-14 season.
SAVVY’S SUITE: Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard has partnered with the Brain Injury Center at Children’s Hospital Boston, inviting children who suffer from the effects of Brain Trauma, both physically and psychologically, to attend a Bruins home game in his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags with Bruins memorabilia and a visit from Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls. Savard started the program on Thursday, January 12, 2012, and it will continue through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season.
COMMUNITY TICKET PROGRAM: For the entirety of the Boston Bruins 2013-14 regular season, Bruins Principal and Alternate Governor Charlie Jacobs is donating ten balcony tickets to every home game to children from charitable organizations across New England, who are invited to enjoy a Bruins home game from these donated seats.
BRAD’S BRIGADE IS BACK: The 2013-14 season marks an exciting new chapter for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand’s charitable program, “Brad’s Brigade”. Established in 2010, Marchand’s program invites children from pediatric oncology units across New England to experience a Bruins home game. Children and their families sit in the loge section and are featured on the Garden HDX. Each family also receives a Brad’s Brigade T-Shirt, a Garden Gold Card and a goodie bag with Bruins memorabilia. At the conclusion of the game, families are escorted down to ice level where they have the opportunity to meet Marchand and get a photo taken with him.
