Boston Bruins Assign Niklas Svedberg to Providence

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, January 2, that the club has assigned goaltender Niklas Svedberg to Providence (American Hockey League). Svedberg was recalled earlier in the day on January 2 and earned his first NHL victory in his first NHL game after making 33 saves in the Bruins 3-2 overtime win against Nashville.



Svedberg has appeared in 22 games for the Providence Bruins this season, racking up an 13-5-3 record with a 2.87 goals against average, .909 save percentage and one shutout.





The 24-year-old netminder has played in a total of 70 games for Providence since joining the team in 2012, earning a career 50-13-5 AHL record. The 2012-13 campaign with the P-Bruins saw Svedberg win 37 games (2nd in the AHL) with a 2.17 goals against average (5th in the AHL), .925 save percentage (3rd in the AHL) and four shutouts to earn himself the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award, which is given annually to the AHL’s outstanding goaltender as voted on by coaches, players and members of the media in each of the league’s 30 member cities. Svedberg’s 37 wins were the second most by a rookie goaltender in AHL history. Svedberg also became the first rookie to be named the AHL’s outstanding goaltender since Jim Carey in the 1994-95 campaign.





In 12 AHL playoff appearances, all coming in 2013, Svedberg compiled a 6-6-0 record with a 3.29 goals against average and .889 save percentage.





Prior to joining Providence, Svedberg skated in three full seasons in the SEL (Swedish Elite League) with MoDo and Brynas with a 2.94 career goals against average in 64 games.






The 6'0", 176-pound goaltender hails from Sollentuna, Sweden and was signed by Boston as a free agent on May 29, 2012.
