THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS…

B’S ASSIGN JOHNSON, WARSOFSKY & TROTMAN TO PROVIDENCE: Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli, announced today, December 29, that the club has assigned Nick Johnson, Zach Trotman and David Warsofsky to Providence. Johnson has appeared in eight games with Boston this season and has recorded seven shots on goal. Trotman made his NHL debut against the Senators in Ottawa on December 29, where he registered three shots on net in 16:41 time on ice. Warsofsky notched his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators on December 29 in his fourth appearance in Boston.

SIXTH ANNUAL BRUINS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT:  The B’s are returning to the Haverhill Valley Forum to host the sixth annual Boston Bruins Holiday Tournament from Friday, December 27 through Monday, December 30. The event will feature Mite and Squirt squads playing in a minimum of three games over a four-day period. Throughout the event the Boston Bruins mascot, Blades, and Ice Girls will be mingling and taking photographs with fans. For more information, please see the “Around Town” section of the Week Ahead.

BRUINS ROSTER TRANSACTIONS:
The Boston Bruins had another week flurried with roster transactions, beginning on December 24, when forward Nick Johnson and defenseman David Warsofsky were assigned to Providence.  Niklas Svedberg was then recalled on December 27, marking his first NHL recall as he served as the backup goaltender for the Bruins/Senators game that same evening.  Shortly thereafter on December 28, Johnson and Warsofsky were recalled back to Boston once again, along with blueliner Zach Trotman, who made his NHL debut against the Senators that same day.  The Bruins also announced that Dennis Seidenberg will miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season with a torn ACL/MCL in his right knee, which he suffered in the third period of the Bruins/Senators game on December 27 in Boston.

B’S TO HOST CASINO NIGHT: On Saturday, February 1, the B’s will host their annual “Casino Night” at the Westin Boston Waterfront, which will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation. The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (VIP Cocktail Reception 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) and will give fans the opportunity to play at casino tables alongside current and former Bruins players.  For ticket options and more information please visit BostonBruins.com/foundation.

BOSTON BRUINS #40 LICENSE PLATE RAFFLE: One lucky winner will have the opportunity to show off their Boston Bruins pride by cruising the roads of New England with Boston Bruins license plate #40, the same number worn by star goaltender Tuukka Rask.  Tickets for the raffle can be purchased through www.bruinsraffles.org and can be attained until February 8, 2014.  This raffle will be supporting the Boston Bruins license plate program and by now, you've probably seen a Boston Bruins license plate on the road in Massachusetts. But beyond the fact that the plate looks good, it is also serving a very important purpose - all proceeds from the sale of the "Invest in Youth Hockey" plate go directly to Massachusetts Youth Hockey. In the time that the plates have been on the road, the program has raised over $1 million for grassroots youth hockey efforts throughout the state.  Money raised through the "Invest in Youth Hockey" initiative has helped pay for the Border Patrol Program, which directly benefits the youngest skaters.

STATS YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…

TUUKKA’S 20TH: Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask earned his fourth shutout (first in the NHL) of the season on December 27 against the Ottawa Senators in Boston, which marked the 20th shutout of his career.  The shutout also marked his 20th victory (tied for second in the NHL) of the season, with his current record to 20-8-2, with a 1.89 goals against average (tied for fourth in the NHL) and a .936 save percentage (third in the NHL).

TWICE AS NICE: The B’s held a seven consecutive game streak in which a Bruin had scored two goals (Reilly Smith three times, Jarome Iginla twice, Zdeno Chara and Brad Marchand from 12/12 – 12/ 23). That ties the longest such streak in Bruins history first done in Dec., 1929 and they are the first team in the NHL with a seven-game such streak since Calgary in Oct., 2007 (credit Elias Sports Bureau). The streak however, came to and end on December 28 in the Bruins 4-3 setback in Ottawa.

COACH’S CORNER: Head Coach Claude Julien recorded his 400th NHL win with a 6-2 victory in Nashville on December 23. Julien currently holds a 401-243-10-81 record in 735 NHL games coached (.609 win percentage), including a 282-157-58 mark in 497 games behind the Boston bench (.627 win percentage). Coach Julien is in his seventh season behind the Bruins bench, which ranks third among longevity among coaches with their current teams (Trotz, 16 and Babcock, 9).
