This week\'s news, notes and numbers.

THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS…

TOYS FOR TOTS COLLECTION DRIVE: The Boston Bruins will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the U.S. Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program at the following Bruins home games in December: Tuesday, December 17 vs. Calgary Flames, and Saturday, December 21 vs. Buffalo Sabres.  U.S. Marines will be stationed at the TD Garden entrance turnstiles, the Community Corner located in Loge 4, and on the balcony level collecting toys and monetary donations.  For every toy donation or $10 donation, fans will receive a raffle ticket to be entered into a drawing for Bruins autographed memorabilia including a team-autographed jersey, team-autographed stick, and a player-autographed puck & photo.  Please see the “Around Town” portion of the Week Ahead for more information.

About Toys for Tots
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.  For more information visit http://www.toysfortots.org.

BRUINS BATTLE ADVERSITY: The Bruins have battled a bit of adversity since the beginning of their four game road stretch, as the team was hit with both the injury and flu bug throughout the week, in addition to losing Shawn Thornton to suspension.  For those keeping track, the Bruins placed Loui Eriksson (concussion) and Adam McQuaid (lower body) on injured reserve and Chris Kelly (broken fibula) on long term injured reserve.  In the wake of the injuries, the B's opted to recall Ryan Spooner, Matt Fraser and Nick Johnson from Providence to join the team in their season-long road swing.  Dougie Hamilton (lower body) and Daniel Paille (upper body) were also victims of the injury bug, as Coach Claude Julien informed reporters that they had both been sent back to Boston to be examined further.  As if the recent injuries didn’t provide the team with a large enough challenge, the Bruins had several players get the flu throughout the trip with a total count of five players catching it. (Gregory Campbell, Zdeno Chara, Chad Johnson, Kevan Miller and Tuukka Rask). Despite the less than ideal circumstances surrounding the team, the Black & Gold still managed to collect all six points with their wins against Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton through the first three games of the trip.

BOSTON BRUINS & SAL’S PIZZA STREET HOCKEY CLINIC: The Bruins and Sal’s Pizza have teamed up to bring the sport of hockey to community centers and other places where children can play in a safe and structured environment. Hockey equipment and instruction are provided for children to learn and enjoy hockey free of charge, while enjoying a Sal’s Pizza party after the clinic.  The next clinic will take place on Thursday, December 19 at the Salem, NH Boys & Girls Club beginning at 4:15 p.m. For more information, please see the “Around Town” section of the Week Ahead.

STATS YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…

HOT AT HOME: The Bruins have a 10-0-2 mark in their last 12 games on home ice, which is their longest home stretch without a regulation loss since a 14-game home win streak from October 25, 2008 to January 1, 2009.  The B’s will look to keep that streak alive with their next home game on Tuesday, December 17, in a rematch against the Calgary Flames.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: In Tuesday night’s matchup against the Calgary Flames, Gregory Campbell and his father Colin Campbell became the sixth father-son duo to both play in at least 600 NHL games.  They join Gordie & Mark Howe, Bobby & Brett Hull, Dave & Adam Creighton, Pat & Mike Stapleton, and Greg & Ryan Malone in this achievement (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).

HEARTFELT HOMECOMING: Jarome Iginla, now in his 18th NHL season, was honored with a pregame video tribute during his return to the Scotiabank Saddledome in Tuesday’s game against the Calgary Flames.  The video recounted many of his notable accolades during his time in Calgary. These accolades include: Flames all-time leader in games (1,219); Flames all-time leader in goals (525); Flames all-time leader in points (1,095); Flames captain during the 2003-2013 seasons; and a two-time Olympic gold Medalist with Team Canada.  Iginla was named the third star of the game, after which Bruins captain Zdeno Chara encouraged him to take one final lap while the rest of the team supported him from the visitor's bench.

The B’s will finish their next slate of games against the Sabres in Buffalo on Thursday, December 19 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

183 AND COUNTING: Following Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Boston Bruins have sold out 183 straight regular season and playoff games. This sellout streak began more than three years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK (TOTW): In the 14th week of the Boston Media Tweet of the Week, NESN’s Jamie Erdahl earns her first career Tweet of the Week victory, with her tweet regarding B’s Captain Zdeno Chara bringing the entire team out to the bench to support Jarome Iginla following their win on Tuesday night in Calgary:

@JamieErdahl: Unbelievable, Chara gets whole team to come back out of locker room to bench to be there for Iginla as he takes final lap in Calgary. #bruins

This week’s honorable mentions listed in no particular order:

@DanCagen: if my mother taught me anything about dealing with the flu, all the #Bruins need in 2nd intermission is some chicken soup and ginger ale.
@AmalieBenjamin: It's unclear if the guy who just walked into the Saddledome was the prime minister or Jarome Iginla, judging from the cameras.
‏‏@kluedeke29: Kevan Miller's 1st NHL goal was for every guy who dreamed of playing in the big show- didn't get drafted, but never quit, gave up the dream

OFF THE ICE…

PATRICE’S PALS: As a part of his continuing charitable initiative Patrice’s Pals, Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron invites children from local hospitals and other organizations to experience a Bruins home game from his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags filled with Bruins memorabilia, a visit from the Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls, as well as a feature on the Garden HDX.  After the game, Patrice’s Pals are escorted to ice level and introduced to Patrice himself who signs autographs and takes pictures with his Pals. This will take place at all Boston Bruins home games during the 2013-14 season.

SAVVY’S SUITE: Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard has partnered with the Brain Injury Center at Children’s Hospital Boston, inviting children who suffer from the effects of Brain Trauma, both physically and psychologically, to attend a Bruins home game in his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags with Bruins memorabilia and a visit from Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls. Savard started the program on Thursday, January 12, 2012, and it will continue through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season.

COMMUNITY TICKET PROGRAM: For the entirety of the Boston Bruins 2013-14 regular season, Bruins Principal and Alternate Governor Charlie Jacobs is donating ten balcony tickets to every home game to children from charitable organizations across New England, who are invited to enjoy a Bruins home game from these donated seats.

BRAD’S BRIGADE IS BACK:  The 2013-14 season marks an exciting new chapter for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand’s charitable program, “Brad’s Brigade”.  Established in 2010, Marchand’s program invites children from pediatric oncology units across New England to experience a Bruins home game. Children and their families sit in the loge section and are featured on the Garden HDX.  Each family also receives a Brad’s Brigade T-Shirt, a Garden Gold Card and a goodie bag with Bruins memorabilia.  At the conclusion of the game, families are escorted down to ice level where they have the opportunity to meet Marchand and get a photo taken with him.
