THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS…

BRUINS TO HOST PROGERIA NIGHT: On Saturday, November 9, the Boston Bruins will be honoring Foxboro native Sam Berns at a special Progeria Night during their home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Progeria, an accelerated aging disease, affects one in every four to eight million newborns.  Sam has a documentary titled “Life According to Sam” out on HBO about his experience with the disease.  He will be participating in various activities during the game including dropping the puck before the start of the game.  For more information, please see the “Around Town” section of the Week Ahead.

BOSTON BRUINS TO SUPPORT USA HOCKEY’S TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE DAY: Join the Boston Bruins and USA Hockey in celebrating Come Play Hockey Month on Saturday, November 2, for “Try Hockey For Free Day.”  Over 50 rinks around New England will be hosting free clinics for children between the ages of four to nine years old to experience ice hockey for the first time and learn the basics of the sport in a fun, safe environment.  The Boston Bruins Youth Development team, mascot, Blades, Ice Girls, and alumni Tommy Songin will be stopping by Winthrop Youth Hockey (Larsen Rink in Winthrop, MA) and Lynn Youth Hockey. 12 BRUINS PARTICIPATING IN MOVEMBER: Bruins players Matt Bartkowski, Patrice Bergeron, Gregory Campbell, Loui Eriksson, Dougie Hamilton, Chris Kelly, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Daniel Paille, Dennis Seidenberg, and Shawn Thornton will participate in the Movember movement by growing and maintaining moustaches during the month of November in order to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. To kick off their month-long participation in Movember the players got a clean shave, provided by Gillette, on Thursday, October 31 at TD Garden after their game against the Anaheim Ducks.  Gillette donated $1,000 to each of the player’s Movember pages to jumpstart their fundraising. Fans can get involved by donating to their favorite player’s Movember page or by starting their own at bostonbruins.com/movember. Bruins prizes will be awarded weekly to the fan with the best Mo. SPOONER RECALLED: Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced October 31 that the team had recalled Ryan Spooner from the Providence Bruins (American Hockey League).  In his first appearance of the season against the Ducks on October 31, Spooner recorded his first NHL assist.  Prior to joining Boston, the 21-year-old Spooner skated in eight games for Providence and has tallied two goals and five assists for seven points, which ranks second on the team. Spooner led the P-Bruins in scoring last season with 59 points on 17 goals and 40 assists in 59 regular season games played.

The Boston Bruins will pay tribute to 90 years of history during ten select home games throughout the 2013-14 season. The organization will honor each of the ten decades of Bruins hockey as part of the 90 Years Celebration presented by Alex and Ani.

STATS YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…

BRUINS STAYING POSITIVE: Entering Friday, the Black & Gold have three players among the league leaders in the plus/minus category with Dennis Seidenberg leading the pack with a +10 rating, which ranks tied for third in the NHL.  Linemates David Krejci and Jarome Iginla are also holding strong in the plus/minus category, with a +9 rating, which is tied for fourth in the league with five other players.

BERGERON STRONG IN THE FACEOFF CIRCLE: Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron has stayed characteristically strong on draws through 12 games this season, winning draws at a 60.3% clip (146/242), which is good for third in the league.  Bergeron finished first on the dot in the NHL during the 2012-13 campaign, winning 549 of 884 faceoffs (62.1%).

CAREER FIRSTS: Two members of the Black and Gold camp recorded NHL career firsts during Thursday’s home game versus the Anaheim Ducks on October 31.  Forward Carl Soderberg scored his first NHL goal, while recent recall Ryan Spooner logged his first NHL point with an assist on the same play during the second period of action. 

FIRST OVERTIME GAME A SUCCESS: The Bruins played their first overtime game of the season in last night’s victory over the Anaheim Ducks.  This was the second overtime game between these two teams at TD Garden, with the other five overtime games of this lifetime series having been played on the Ducks home turf.  It was the first ever shootout between these two teams.

UPCOMING GAMES…

THIS WEEK’S MATCHUPS: Following an away game tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in New York against the Islanders, the Bruins will return home for two home games the following week.  The Tuesday, November 5, 7:00 p.m. matchup will see the Bruins play the Dallas stars for the first time this season, while the Florida Panthers will make their way to the Garden on Thursday, November 7 for a rematch against the Black and Gold. 

UPCOMING GAMES BROADCAST SCHEDULE: The NESN broadcast team of Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley and Jamie Erdahl will be covering all of the Bruins games scheduled for this week, beginning with the away game against the Islanders in New York on Saturday, November 2 and continuing on Tuesday and Thursday at the Garden with matchups against the Dallas Stars and the Florida Panthers respectively.  The tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle all radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub.

172 AND COUNTING: Following Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Boston Bruins have sold out 172-straight regular season and playoff games. This sellout streak began more than three years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

OFF THE ICE…

PATRICE’S PALS: As a part of his continuing charitable initiative Patrice’s Pals, Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron invites children from local hospitals and other organizations to experience a Bruins home game from his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags filled with Bruins memorabilia, a visit from the Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls, as well as a feature on the Garden HDX.  After the game, Patrice’s Pals are escorted to ice level and introduced to Patrice himself who signs autographs and takes pictures with his Pals. This will take place at all Boston Bruins home games during the 2013-14 season.

SAVVY’S SUITE: Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard has partnered with the Brain Injury Center at Children’s Hospital Boston, inviting children who suffer from the effects of Brain Trauma, both physically and psychologically, to attend a Bruins home game in his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags with Bruins memorabilia and a visit from Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls. Savard started the program on Thursday, January 12, 2012, and it will continue through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season.

COMMUNITY TICKET PROGRAM: For the entirety of the Boston Bruins 2013-14 regular season, Bruins Principal and Alternate Governor Charlie Jacobs is donating ten balcony tickets to every home game to children from charitable organizations across New England, who are invited to enjoy a Bruins home game from these donated seats.

BRAD’S BRIGADE IS BACK:  The 2013-14 season marks an exciting new chapter for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand’s charitable program, “Brad’s Brigade”.  Established in 2010, Marchand’s program invites children from pediatric oncology units across New England to experience a Bruins home game. Children and their families sit in the loge section and are featured on the Garden HDX.  Each family also receives a Brad’s Brigade T-Shirt, a Garden Gold Card and a goodie bag with Bruins memorabilia.  At the conclusion of the game, families are escorted down to ice level where they have the opportunity to meet Marchand and get a photo taken with him.
