BostonBruins.com – It could not have been a more perfect night aboard the MV Provincetown II Cruise Ship on Wednesday, July 24th. At 5:30 pm, a stream of Bruins fans started to board the ship while it got ready to depart for the open water of Boston Harbor.

The Boston Bruins Foundation, founded in 2003, hosted its annual Boston Harbor Cruise in which people enjoyed a night on the Harbor while supporting a great cause. All proceeds from ticket sales for the night went directly to the 2013 Boston Bruins Foundation Pan-Massachusetts Challenge Bike Team.

Interacting and mingling with the fans was Boston Bruins Foundation Executive Director Bob Sweeney. He could not help but to be excited about how successful this event has been this year as well as years past.

“We’ve raised over a million dollars for the Dana Farber to date,” Sweeney boasted. “This year I believe we have 35 [Pan-Mass bike team] riders so we should be well over $150,000 this year.”

There is a reason why this cruise happens during this time of the year, other than just the peaceful summer weather.

“It’s kind of like the final kick-off for when all our riders participate which, this year, will be next weekend,” Sweeney explained.

It is no surprise that this event is such a big hit. For $30 a ticket, Bruins faithful get to enjoy gorgeous views of Boston from aboard the ship while enjoying a live band. Also on board were two cash bars that were available for the 21 years-or-older event.

The Boston Harbor journey included ways for the crowd to get involved more personally also, while supporting a great cause.

“We have the Ice Girls selling raffle tickets and then we’ll have a few silent auctions,” Sweeney explained. “Then toward the end of the night we’ll do four or five live auction items.”

The live auction was a hit, offering prizes from tickets to various sporting events to a signed Tuukka Rask framed poster. However, the hottest item of the night was Andrew Ference’s framed, worn Army Ranger jacket. After a back and forth bidding war, the lucky winner dished out $2,100 for his new prized possession which will be donated to the Foundation.

The event was a relaxing way to spend a picturesque summer night and Sweeney had nothing but good things to say.

“The people enjoy it. I mean, we’re lucky tonight with the weather here, we have a great view here over looking the harbor,” Sweeney said while taking in his surroundings.

“It’s a nice way to spend a summer night and raise some money for the Bruins Foundation.”
