Subban Ready to Step Up - Goaltender Malcolm Subban has garnered a great deal of attention from the Bruins organization.

After a successful first year at Bruins Development Camp in 2012 and a strong season with the Belleville Bulls of the OHL this past year, Subban is expected to turn pro this year.

“I know it is a huge step to the next level. I’m going to do everything I can over the summer to get ready for it, and I know that’s my goal right now.”

According to Assistant GM Don Sweeny, Subban is well on his way to accomplishing that goal.

“I know our coaches are really looking forward to working with Malcolm. He’s such an athletic goaltender that has so much promise. We expect him to be part of the pro environment this year.”

The 18-year old, who started playing goalie when he was 12-years-old, says that he knows there is still a lot he needs to work on and knows that he can constantly be improving.

“I haven’t been playing for that long. I learn something every year and I think I try to take everything in, everything that I can get. The biggest thing for me.”

But Subban has already taken steps to improve himself since his last development camp.

“Every year you get bigger, stronger, faster during summers and I felt like already I’ve been getting a lot stronger. My maturity level as a player has changed also. Coming in here and being more responsible for my body and myself. I think those are the biggest things for me what I’ve learned this year. I think that will help me later on.”

The Toronto native says he learned the importance of maturity and dedication from his older brother PK Subban, defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens.

“He used to say just keep working hard. He’s been a huge role model in my life. I’ve watched him a lot and that’s helped me.”

And now Malcolm is eager to pass on these valuable lessons to younger brother Jordan Subban, a defenseman who was drafted this year by the Vancouver Canucks.

It’s safe to say the Subban’s are a hockey family.

“It’s pretty crazy. It's a huge thrill for us and we’re truly blessed right now. It couldn’t have turned out better.”

But it’s not only his family that inspires Malcolm. It comes as no surprise that the goaltender sees the Bruins own Tuukka Rask as a tremendous role model.

“I watched him a lot in the playoffs especially. He played really well. Really composed guy. Really calm in the net and really centered. Good rebound control and battles. It’s great to see that. You just keep working hard and things go up from there.”

Many have hopes that he will follow in Rask’s footsteps, but for right now Malcolm Subban is focused on the task at hand.

“My focus right now is to develop to be at the AHL level and to be at the next level in general. I still got a lot of work to do to get up to that level. So I’m just working really hard right now to do what I can just to get to that level and that hasn’t entered my mind yet like I said.  I’m just really focused right now and I’m getting better and improving.”
