O\'Gara Blog - Entry 4: Family Support

B's prospect and 2013 National Champion Rob O'Gara is in his third year at Bruins development camp after being selected by the Black & Gold in the fifth round (151st overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

O'Gara has been kind enough to agree to keep a players blog to share his day-to-day experience during his time at Bruins Development Camp.

The defenseman joins camp after his first season at Yale, where he recorded seven assists in 37 games. The blueliner also had an assist and was on the ice for all four of the Bulldogs' goals in the NCAA National Championship Final against Quinnipiac University.

The 6'4'', 205-pound defenseman hails from Smithtown, NY.

O'Gara Blog - Entry 4 - Family Support

My dad never played hockey, he played football when he was younger but he was a huge hockey fan. My family are all Islander fans, real die hards. They lived through the glory days, you know, the four Stanley Cups. My dad was always a big fan; he loved the game. A couple weeks ago we actually watched my first skating lesson on tape. Basically I was getting pushed around in a chair the whole time so it didn’t look good. My dad loved the game so that’s how I got in to it.

I have one younger sister and she plays softball. She never got in to the hockey craze. I guess getting dragged all over the east coast kind of turned her off to that.

When you get older, travel gets a little increased. Back in U16's back home, every weekend you’re in New Jersey or Philly then one weekend you’re home and then you’re somewhere else. So it was a lot of traveling, not much time at home on the weekends. But it’s the scarifies you make and I loved it.

The support from my parents is unbelievable. At Milton, my dad came to every game. We would play on Wednesdays and Saturdays and he would skip out of work early and drive four hours to watch games on Wednesdays. My mom never missed a game on a Saturday. Being at Yale now, it’s a quicker ride so it’s a little easier on them and the gas bills but they are the most supportive parents I’ve ever met.

In 2010, we were following the Draft and every pick wasn’t really going up on the TV, so we were refreshing on the computer. It was late in the fifth round when we found out I was drafted. My dad got up and he was jumping around and they were all really excited. When I got to Development Camp my first year, my dad felt like a celebrity. People would be like ‘Oh, you’re Rob O’Gara’s Dad’- it was pretty funny. As a kid, to have your parents so proud of you, it’s the best feeling ever.

My dad especially loves Development Camp, my mom loves it too, but after the season ended at Yale all he could talk about was being able to watch this. He couldn’t be here the first day on Wednesday but he took off work Thursday and Friday to make it here. It’s great to have him here. It’s great to have them all here. All three of them are here just to see them up there. It’s great.

For all the scarifies they’ve made monetarily, driving everywhere and barely being home most of my childhood - to allow them to have that sort of pride and happiness at that moment after winning the National Championship, to be on the ice separated from the team for a second, to look up and see them crying - it was truly one of the greatest feelings you could have.
