Chiarelli Looking to Add, Not Subtract

9:02 AM - General Manager Peter Chiarelli and his staff are hard at work - though most of the work has already been done in preparation for the day, especially for a Bruins' team that has a solid lineup, with room to add pieces.

The Bruins GM took a few minutes to check in, and surprisingly, I caught him at a time when his phone took a brief hiatus (not sure how that happened!)

First, he gave a run-down of the day for the B's hockey ops staff.

"Well, it's a busy day. You don't want to force issues, force trades. We've got a couple of little things that we may look in to. Often times on the last day, teams make bigger decisions and sometimes some interesting players – the options on interesting players – fall on your lap, so you have to be prepared for that. Basically, we are prepared, we've already done some deals – player acquisitions. You want to just be prepared for something you don't expect."

"We have cap space and we've got some – we've actually got quite a lot of players, so it would have to be something pretty good for us to do something significant. You've just got to let it happen and you make your calls, and the day happens pretty quickly, actually."

Prior to the acquisition of Jagr yesterday, Chiarelli said he was focusing on adding a defenseman and forward, but reiterated in his press conference regarding Jagr that he was keeping his options open.

So, what is he looking to target today?

"I'm not going to tell you exactly," he said with a smile, knowing I wasn't prying for the specifics. "But there's a couple of players, not like Jagr, or not like Iginla, that we may try and go after. Those are the things we've been working on, anyways, and then you have to make the decision, we made the decision to proceed on Jagr. So, I don't know if we'll really go hard at any of those players. But, I always talk about adding depth, we may do that, defensively, although I like our core, and maybe add one more player up front."

Though this isn't a time when the Bruins are looking to rebuild and rack up draft picks and prospects like some teams around the NHL, the day can often times have ramifications on not only the current roster, but Providence's lineup or the future roster for the B's moving forward.

"We've tried to go into this year with just adding players with expiring contracts, so at least you have the flexibility to decide if you wanted to extend them later on," said Chiarelli.

"The depth extends into Providence; the coach is always on egg shells a little bit around the deadline. But, I don't think we'll move anyone significant down there, or move anyone significant up here. I'm trying to add, I don't want to subtract, so I think everyone can rest easy."

LIVE PRESSER: Set your alarms. GM Peter Chiarelli's press conference at 5:00 p.m. ET will be streamed live on BostonBruins.com.
