GM Peter Chiarelli to address media today at 6:15 p.m. ET
BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, February 7, that the team has traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the New York Islanders in exchange for a conditional second round pick in 2014 or 2015. Chiarelli will address the media regarding the transaction today at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Thomas, who captured the Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophies during the Bruins Stanley Cup championship run in 2011, elected to take the 2012-13 season off and was suspended by the club after he did not report to training camp. The 2012-13 season marked the final year of four-year contract with the Bruins worth an annual NHL cap figure of $5,000,000.
Thomas appeared in 378 NHL regular season games (all with the Bruins) and recorded a 196-121-45 record with a 2.48 Goals Against Average, .921 Save Percentage and 31 shutouts. His 31 shutouts rank third all time in team history and 196 wins rank fourth. For his postseason career, Thomas appeared in 50 games with a 29-21 record, 2.07 GAA and six shutouts.
The 38-year-old is a two-time Vezina Trophy Winner who played in four straight NHL All-Star Games from 2008-2012. He was also a member of the silver medal winning United States team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Thomas was originally drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the 11th round (217th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on September 14, 2005.
