Send in the Bruins

BOSTON, MA — On December 17th, a group of Bruins staff members traveled to the Toys for Tots warehouse to volunteer and assist the group with its final holiday push before toy delivery.

Barbies, toy cars, puzzles, and just about every board game imaginable lined the walls of their warehouse in South Boston and the Bruins staff spent the time dividing up the countless boxes of toys by gender and age.

Gifts of every type, from classic board games like Candy Land, to outdoor Nerf products were all prepared for distribution under the guidance of Marines, who run the program’s operations and who said the extra support is always greatly appreciated.

"It’s awesome having companies like the Bruins help out. We don’t have the man power to support the program on our own," said Marine Corporal Johnny Vela. "The Bruins are obviously a big help - they are actually probably the biggest helpers we have."

The Bruins and Toys for Tots are no strangers, with the two organizations having been partners for several years. This year, B's Community Relations Coordinator Jenn Young said the opportunity presented itself for Bruins staff to travel to the warehouse and the see the Toys for Tots operations inner workings.

"We work with them every year in December, and it’s a good way for us to give back by getting to their warehouse, and helping in their trenches," said Young. "We love working with them because they kind of drop everything for us when we ask.

"They’re a great organization," added Young. "Obviously, what they do for the Boston community is awesome."

The Toys for Toys program started back in 1947 and has grown and expanded every year since then.

Today, the United States Marine Corps runs the organization. Every year from October through December, Toys for Tots collects new and unopened toys to be distributed to less fortunate children throughout the United States.

"I didn’t realize how big [their warehouse] was, and how many volunteers they really need on a daily basis," Young said. "We only made a small dent on the mass amount of toys that they had, but I think the little bit that we did is really helpful."
