Brighton, MA - On Tuesday evening, members of the Bruins staff traveled to Cradles to Crayons in Brighton to help put together packages of clothing and other goods for underprivileged children.

The B’s staffers at “The Giving Factory” was charged with inspecting clothes for quality, sorting them into the correct bins, and packaging them to be sent to children in need.

Angela Martano, Cradles to Crayons’ Corporate Volunteer Coordinator, gave an introductory speech, giving background on the organization.

“Cradles to Crayons serves children all over Massachussets who are living in low-income or homeless situations,” Martano said. “It’s our goal to provide them high-quality items, to help keep them safe, to keep them warm, to get them ready to learn, and to help them feel valued.”

Martano then pointed out a sign behind her that read “Quality = Dignity” before she sent the staff to different stations to complete various tasks, to stress how important it is for C2C to provide quality, durable clothing for the children.

“We work closely with Cradles to Crayons,” said Jennifer Young, Boston Bruins Community Relations Coordinator. “We do our PJ drive with them every year, so we have a really good relationship. We really look forward to working with them, and for us to collect PJ’s all year, to come here and see the warehouse is a neat experience.”

After the night concluded, Martano estimated that the B’s staff helped to assemble clothing packages for nearly 150 children.

“I think it’s important for the team to be a part of the community and to try to help out in any way that they can,” said Assistant General Manager Jim Benning, who was on hand with son Nick to volunteer. “Any time you can help in all the different activities [Cradles to Crayons] does to help the community, it’s great.

“Anytime you can give back and think about other people, it’s great.”

“It’s really nice to be able to go out and help the community,” added Nick.

And with a strong showing of Bruins staff making the trip, Martano said the outside help Cradles to Crayons gets on a daily basis is vital to their operation.

“Volunteer help is most important, without volunteer help we literally couldn’t function,” she said. “It’s really awesome when big names like the Bruins get involved with us, because they know you guys, and they know Cradles to Crayons now, and just the two married together is really cool for us.”
