Boston, MA -- An eight spoked "B" is displayed prominently on the plaque at the entrance of Preschool Classroom Three in the brand new building for Boston's Ellis Memorial settlement house in the South End.
The sign, and a second spoked-B on the classroom wall, is a dedication to the Boston Bruins Foundation and the support the team has lent the facility in its efforts to build a new Children's Center in a renovated building adjacent to the group's current location on Berkeley Street.
"It really is great to be here tonight, and to be a part of this," said Bruins Principal Charlie Jacobs. "The Bruins Foundation has been really active with Ellis Memorial House for at least four or five years.
"Having met with their leadership, even before they purchased this building, and seeing their vision come to reality tonight, and having the Bruins logo behind us here, it really is a very fulfilling experience."
The B's donated some $250,000 to the cause, but it’s more than just monetary funds that the Boston Bruins Foundation grants when it backs a charity like Ellis Memorial
It’s also lends the support, and the ensuing recognition, of having the B's organization committed to help.
"[They wanted] to have their own state of the art early childhood education facility," Boston Bruins Foundation Executive Director Bob Sweeney explained on the night of the Children’s Center opening. "It’s a great, great feeling to see what the end result turned out to be."
"And this, this to us is very important," added the former B's forward of the classroom. "We look to see all different initiatives, and this one was at the top of the list.
"It’s a great, great feeling to see what the end result turned out to be."
Ellis Memorial is exactly the kind of organization that the Bruins Foundation is more than willing to support, according to Jacobs.
"We’re going to help a lot of kids here in the South End," said Jacobs with a excited smile. "And the kids that are coming in through these classrooms, these are pre-K, so, it's really a young age.
"And hopefully they see the spoked-B and get excited about our team, too."
