Striding in the Rain

REVERE, MA – The sky couldn’t rain on the Boston Bruins Foundation’s parade on Revere Beach this morning. Well actually it did, but that didn’t stop the event from being a complete success.

Shawn Thornton and Olympic gold medalist Mike Eruzione partnered with the Bruins Foundation’s Dr. Bob Harney Stride for Health Walk, Run or Roll walk in Revere, MA this morning.

Along with supporting community outreach programs, proceeds also went to funding Cardiology, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine programs at Hallmark Health System. Patient Care Director Anthony J. Alley, explained just how beneficial the Bruins relationship with Hallmark has been.

“Thanks to the grant from the Boston Bruins foundation we’ve been able to offer a concussion program where we can do concussion screenings for athletes at local schools which has been a huge success,” Alley said.

“Having Shawn Thornton here really means more than I can say,” he said. “I mean he is the reason why, besides Doctor Harney, that these people are out here in the rain today.

Thornton signed autographs, took pictures with fans, and even raffled off a pair of signed boxing gloves. He was happy to see the amount of people showing up for the cause despite the rain.

“It’s pretty amazing turnout, I mean it’s not very nice out right now and people are dealing with it and nobodies complaining," said Thornton shortly before the supporters embarked on their walk along the boulevard. "Everybody seems to be in good spirits."

Supporters were armed with umbrellas, ponchos, and even trash bags to battle the elements. Some people even walked their dogs.

Eruzione explained what inspires people to get out of their warm beds on a Saturday morning to walk through the rain.

“I just think the concern and the care they have for other people,” the Olympian said. “Any time you can help other people out – we’ve all been very fortunate in our lives.”

Hallmark specializes in a wide variety of hip and knee replacements, performing miracles every day in people’s lives. Eruzione, who’s no stranger to miracles, has a personal connection to Dr. Harney.

“He’s performed surgery on me, my son, my other son, my father,” Eruzione said.

Director of the Bruins Foundation Bob Sweeney spoke of Doctor Harney’s legacy in the event.

“Unfortunately Doctor Harney passed away a few months ago battling cancer so this year – and years to come – we’ll be walking on his behalf and all the great work he’s done in this community.”

“I come back and be a part of this event for him,” Eruzione said.

Doctor Harney’s daughter, Jessica Harney was largely involved in the event and currently directs rehab services with Hallmark Health. He is also survived by his the vision of today’s event and medicines relationship to sports.

“Excellence in medicine and excellence in athletes kind of go hand in hand,” Alley concluded.
