Subban Secures Title for Canada
false

BostonBruins.com – Hockey powerhouses Canada and Russia needed longer than the anticipated four games to determine a winner in the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge.

With the series tied at one game apiece, the scene shifted to Halifax, Nova Scotia for Game 3 on Monday evening, where Russia edged Canada for a 6-5 victory. Forward Andrei Sigarev’s second goal of the game with 6:23 left to play proved to be the game winner.

On Tuesday, Subban, who did not play in Game 3, was back between the pipes for Canada in his first appearance since earning player of the game honors in Game 1 of the series.

The 25th overall pick in June’s draft proved to be a wise choice in goal for Canadian Head Coach Steve Spott, as he stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Subban showed his elite athleticism in the first period, when he slid across the front of the net to deny Russian star Nail Yakupov and keep the game knotted at one. Russia opened up scoring in the second period with a power-play goal off the stick of Albert Yarulin, but Canada answered with back-to-back power-play goals from Ty Rattie. Florida Panthers prospect Jonathan Huberdeau clinched Canada’s 4-2 victory with another power-play goal in the third period.

Canada’s Game Four win sent the teams to a 20-minute sudden death overtime to crown a champion. Subban stayed in goal for the Canadians in overtime, and kept the Russians at bay until his teammate Ryan Strome found the net with a series-winning wrist shot past Russian goaltender Andrei Vasilevski at 3:20 of the period.

Both Subban and Hamilton will look to build on their momentum in preparation for the World Junior Championship to be held in December in Ufa, Russia. In the meantime, the two can turn their attention to duties with the B’s, as training camp opens in a few weeks at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington.
