Weekend Update: Road to World Juniors

BostonBruins.com – During the otherwise quiet month of August, prospects Matt Grzelcyk, Dougie Hamilton and Malcolm Subban have upped the tempo of their offseason regimens, as their respective countries begin early preparations for the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.

Grzelcyk suited up in red, white and blue at USA Hockey's annual National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, NY, while Hamilton and Subban have been competing for Team Canada in the Canada-Russia Challenge, reminiscent of the 1972 Summit Series and taking the place of Canada's development camp.

Team USA's contingent wrapped up on Saturday afternoon, as the U.S. fell to Finland 3-2 in overtime.

Grzelcyk provided an assist to knot the game at one goal apiece ten minutes into the third period. The Charlestown native, who was selected by the Bruins in the third round of June’s draft, released a hard wrist shot that Tyler Biggs deflected in for the first of his two goals. However, Finland’s Miro Aaltonen converted an unassisted goal just over two minutes into the overtime session to hand Team USA its first loss of the camp.

The defenseman finished the Evaluation Camp with four assists and eight penalty minutes in five total games.

On Friday, Dougie Hamilton was held scoreless as Russia defeated Canada 6-3 in the second game of the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge. Goaltender Malcolm Subban, who was named the player of the game in Canada’s 3-2 opening victory, did not play in Game 2.

“The first game we had more energy and took it to them,” Hamilton told Metro News Halifax. “The second game we had penalty trouble, and it drained us on the big ice and we got frustrated.

“We just have to get back to working hard and get the puck in the end more often.”

Hamilton and Team Canada will look to bounce back as the four-game series moves to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the final two games on Monday, August 13 and Tuesday, August 14.

The starting time for both games is 7:00 p.m. ET, and exclusive broadcast coverage will be provided by TSN.
