Bruins Prospects Already in Action
Bruins fans sweating for hockey news in these hot August days can find solace in the pool of B\u2019s prospects competing in prestigious international junior camps and tournaments.

BostonBruins.com -- Bruins fans sweating for hockey news in these hot August days can find solace in the pool of B’s prospects competing in prestigious international junior camps and tournaments.

Grzelcyk

As if the 2012 Bruins Development Camp wasn’t enough, third round draft selection Matthew Grzelcyk is attacking yet another hockey camp in audition for the U.S. National Junior Team.

Grzelcyk collected two assists for Team USA Blue in a scrimmage game against Team USA White to help his side win 4-3 on August 5.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Camp roster was trimmed from 45 to 34 players, with Grzelcyk among those making the cut. The defenseman can now has games against Finland (yesterday and 11) and Sweden (August 9) to showcase his talents and potentially earn a spot on Team U.S.A. for the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Charlestown-native was part of the Under-18 Championship Team that captured gold at the 2012 IIHF Men’s World U18 tournament back in April. Other notable U-18 teammates trying to take the next step with him are fellow NHL draft picks Jacob Trouba and Brady Skjei, who were both taken in the first round of this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

Speaking of first round draft picks, Malcolm Subban and Dougie Hamilton are slated to compete together for Team Canada in the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge for four games on August 9, 10, 13, and 14.

The event will honor the memory of the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl air disaster, while also commemorating the 40th anniversary of the legendary 1972 Summit Series.

For hockey-starved Bruins fans, this event also marks a great chance for the B’s faithful to see Subban and Hamilton guard the crease as comrades against a live action enemy – something Bruins fans may hope to see one day at the pro level. But for now, the opportunity to watch them test their metal against the top selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Nail Yakupov, may be the best instrument to gauge their pedigree short of a time machine.

The two prospects already have sky-high expectations surrounding their future at this point in their development, having both represented Canada at the Junior level.

Stopping the relentless Yakupov and performing well in the Canada-Russia Challenge has more immediate repercussions as well. The Challenge is monitored closely with the implications of roster spots in mind for the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, which is set to take place December 26 into January 5 of 2013.

Team Canada gathered in Subban and Hamilton’s hometown of Toronto for two days to practice at the MasterCard Centre prior to departing for Yaroslavl, Russia for the first two games of the tournament. The other pair of games is scheduled to take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In all likelihood, the teenagers who skated just weeks ago on the Ristuccia Arena ice for Bruins 2012 Development Camp could be asked to set the edges on an international stage with the support of their entire country – unless of course, they find themselves preoccupied with duties to the Black & Gold.
