BOSTON – On Tuesday, July 24, the Boston Bruins will host Mayor Thomas J. Menino as a special “When You Read, You Score” guest reader at Codman Square. Mayor Menino will be reading “Baby Brains: The Smartest Baby in the Whole World” to 150 Boston children. Following the reading, the Mayor and the Bruins mascot, Blades, will hand out Bruins goodie bags with books provided by ReadBoston to each of the children in attendance.

This summer, the Boston Bruins continue their efforts to improve literacy in Massachusetts through their “When You Read, You Score” reading program. Throughout the summer the Bruins mascot, Blades, and the Bruins Ice Girls will deliver “Reading Rinks” to six local public libraries throughout Massachusetts. Each “Reading Rink” features a Bruins rug, Bruins themed hockey furniture, bookcases made from hockey sticks and a kids-sized Bruins rocking chair. The space provides a fun, engaging environment for children and their families to read together. Each library was chosen by the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC).

The Boston Bruins first teamed up with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in 2009 when the organizations formed the “When You Read, You Score” summer reading program. The program incorporates unique theme each summer to encourage young people to keep reading during their summer break. This year the Bruins have chosen the “Dream Big : Read!” theme. Studies show that reading over the summer helps kids maintain skills they have learned over the academic year and grow towards the skills required for the next school year. The Bruins Summer Reading Program "When You Read, You Score," in conjunction with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, estimated 90,000 children across Massachusetts will participate in the Environmental Reading Program.

The Codman Square Library is one of over 80 sites that the Storymobile visits each week in every neighborhood of Boston, where children get a professional storytelling experience and a free new book to take home. ReadBoston was founded by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and other city leaders in 1995 as a non-profit children’s literacy organization with an ambitious goal: to ensure that every child in Boston can read on grade level by the end of the third grade. ReadBoston seeks to be a catalyst for change within all of Boston’s diverse communities by funneling resources, innovative programs, and books into Boston neighborhoods and by creating partnerships with organizations committed to helping children.
