Krug Battling to Return to NHL

WILMINGTON, MA – Every single player at the Bruins’ sixth annual Development Camp has one career goal in mind – to suit up and skate in an NHL game. Well, that is except for defenseman Torey Krug, who is trying to do it again.

Krug

The Bruins signed Krug as a free agent after Michigan State’s season ended on March 25 of this year, and he made his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 3 at the TD Garden.

The former Spartan did his best to soak in the entire experience.

“It was amazing,” Krug said. “That experience was everything I thought it would be as a kid growing up dreaming of playing in the NHL.

“It lived up to its hype so it’s something I’ll never forget and I’m excited. It gives me a lot of incentive to get back with the Bruins.”

Two days later, the native of Livonia, Michigan registered his first NHL point - an assist to Milan Lucic in a 3-1 win over Ottawa. But despite the promise Krug displayed in his limited time with the B’s, assistant general manager Don Sweeney has stressed that the defenseman must prove himself once again.

“He’s made his impression, he did very well, and now he’s got to go out and…push someone out of the way and earn that spot, and I think he’s excited to try and do that,” Sweeney said.

Krug is well aware that his play a few months ago doesn’t earn him any favors, but he is confident that he can win a roster spot this fall.

“Coming into the fall, everything resets,” said Krug. “I have to earn my way back in the lineup and take care of my own job.”

Throughout the Bruins Development Camp, Sweeney was vocal in his support and confidence of the puck-moving defenseman.

“He’s been a two-time captain at Michigan State, he’s got leadership qualities, he’s a confident kid that believes in himself and we love the transitional part of his game,” Sweeney said.

The bar for Krug, while reset from a few months ago, remains high, and the 21-year-old believes he can make an impact as soon as this season.

“Anything less, obviously I’ll have to deal with it, but my goal is to make the team in the fall,” he said.
