Subban Gets Serious

WILMINGTON, MA – Less than a week after being drafted 24th overall by the Boston Bruins, top pick Malcolm Subban was strapping on his pads for the team’s sixth annual Development Camp.

While the young goaltender flashed his skill in Wilmington, the B’s coaching staff was pleased to see Subban develop on and off the ice.

“He literally just went from the excitement of being drafted in the last weekend to being thrown into this environment," said Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney. "[That] can catch anyone off guard, especially when you’re 17 or 18-years-old."

Fortunately for the B’s, their prized pick seemed to catch on quickly as camp progressed. The always cheerful and joking Subban took on a more serious tone and maintained his focus on hard work and preparation.

On the Sunday of rigorous physical testing at Development Camp, while some prospects expressed grief at a surprise early morning testing session, Subban remained focused.

“We just got a taste of what it was going to be like for [training] camp and so on,” said Subban. “We'll know how to prepare and be ready for it.”

That off-ice education and growth is especially important for Subban, considering the skill he’s already shown on the rink.

“I mean, the athleticism you see right away and how quick he is in net,” remarked Sweeney.

“Most goalies don’t like to be scored on and he’s no different in that regard.”

The B’s Development Camp certainly displayed Subban’s promise as a goaltending prospect, but he isn’t interested in speculating when he might showcase his skills in a Bruins uniform.

“I’m not sure to be honest,” said Subban. “It all depends on how I develop.

“I've just got to keep working hard and develop and hopefully make the best of my opportunity when I get a chance.”
