Volden Continues to Improve
With the conclusion of the Bruins sixth annual Development Camp, goaltender Lars Volden looks to continue and improve himself and grow as a high prospect in the B\u2019s goalie tree.

WILMINGTON, MA – With the conclusion of the Bruins sixth annual Development Camp, goaltender Lars Volden looks to continue and improve himself and grow as a high prospect in the B’s goalie tree.

"It has been a tough five days," he said on the final day of camp. "We have had physical tests and we have been running on the beach.

"It’s been hard practice but I think that’s good that’s what we have to do to make ourselves better.

"This has been a good camp…so I just hope for the best and hope that I come back next year."

The Norwegian spends most of his time between the pipes in Finland, but came to Boston early to acclimate to the time difference.

"A little bit, but I can’t complain about that," he said. "We came one day before everyone else so I think we should have a normal feeling now, and I don’t feel it that much."

With the conclusion of camp, a fully acclimated Volden boarded a plane to go back over the Atlantic Ocean with fellow Scandinavian goaltender, Niklas Svedberg.

Volden had a stellar season in Finland with Jokipojat and posted a 1.98 save percentage and .911 goals-against average during the regular season.

The 19-year-old also represented Norway against Russia in the IIHF World Championship and acknowledged how the experience helped him grow confidence as a player.

“Well of course it was a great experience there to play against Russia,” he recalled. “They won the whole championship so of course that’s pretty big…you get the feeling like you can play against the best players.”

Volden, who will turn 20 later this month, is just one among a handful of goaltenders in the B’s crop of backstops.

“[He'll] go back and play in Finland,” B’s Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney said. "He’s made that next step to go up to the elite league there and play."

Goalies such as Tuukka Rask, Anton Khudobin, Volden, Svedberg and now Subban are growing at difference stages in the B's system.

“So you can see the steps that each and every one of these kids go through to get to that next level and gain that experience,” Sweeney said.

But the ideal fruit of management's labor could bring friendly competition within the organization to push for starting roles as the staggered crop of goaltenders ripen each season.

“My goal for this year is to be the number one goalie where I’m going to play in Espoo,” Volden said. “I will just work hard and do my things and just prepare myself for the season and just play well when I get the chance.”

Volden plans to keep improving every single aspect of his game.

"I want to be the best possible," he said. "I want to work on everything and get my game stronger."

So for now, Volden will continue to take the necessary steps as a high seeded goalie in the Bruins system, with hopes that one day his game will blossom to something spectacular in a garden full of 17,565 screaming fans.
