GM Peter Chiarelli highlights four local talents heading into the NHL Draft

Beanpot Rookies, B\'s Hopefuls? – Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli highlighted four local talents that could hear their names called at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft during a conference call with media on Monday. Chiarelli hinted some of them might even be on the Bruins’ radar.

Chiarelli first mentioned the Norwell, Massachusetts native Chris Calnan, an 18-year-old forward for Noble and Greenough School.

Calnan appeared in 29 games for the Bulldogs this season, scoring 28 goals and 27 assists for a total of 55 points, leading his team to the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association Championship.

Chiarelli described Calnan as, “a good player – a big strong kid – very physically mature power forward type.”

At 6-foot-2 and190 pounds, Calnan proved his physical prowess at the NHL Scouting Combine last month, where he was the only participant to finish first in four events; leading in both vertical jumps (32.5 inches), vertical leg power at peak pause (6818 watts), and mean power output (11.4 watts/kg3).

The pro-prospect has a lot ahead of him, with NHL Central Scouting ranking him 69h overall in the pool of North American skaters. The rising senior also plans to attend Boston College, where he might square off against fellow NHL hopefuls in the Beanpot.

One such prospect is Boston-born Jimmy Vesey, who is on his way to Harvard University and entering the draft for the second time.

“[Vesey’s] had a breakout year there,” Chiarelli said. “Can really make some really good plays with the puck, whether it’s shooting or passing.”

There are high hopes for Vesey this time around, with NHL Central Scouting ranking him 77th overall in the pool of North American skaters.

The 19-year-old totaled (48-43-91) in the Eastern Junior Hockey League and won the league MVP with South Shore this season. He also received the John Carlton Award, given by the Boston Bruins organization for exceptional performance both on the ice and in the classroom.

The left winger’s father, Jim Vesey, was a former Charlestown and Merrimack College standout before playing 15 games in the NHL, including 11 with the St. Louis Blues and even donning the spoked-B for four games.

Chiarelli also mentioned local defenseman Matthew Grzelcyk. The Charlestown native totaled 22 points with the U.S. U-18’s in the USHL this season; a feat that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Bruins general manager.

“[Grzelcyk’s] a very good, mobile defenseman,” Chiarelli said. “He’s later on down but he’s got a good head on his shoulders.”

Grzelcyk is ranked 177th in Central Scouting’s list of North American skaters, and plans to attend Boston University, where he will be joined by fellow Charlestown native Brendan Collier.

Collier served as team captain for Malden Catholic High School this season. In 25 games, he scored 26 goals with 38 assists for a total of 64 points, earning him the 143rd rank among Central Scouting’s North American skaters.

Chiarelli described Collier as, “kind of under the radar a little bit but a real gritty kid.”

The forward will spend next year with the Valley Junior Warriors before joining Grzelcyk and the Terriers in 2013.
