Ference Raises Environmental Awareness

BostonBruins.com –- During his speech Wednesday morning, Richard J. Sullivan, Secretary of Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs spoke about how "citizens in every walk of life" need to be involved in the environmental conversation.

That was certainly true when Massachusetts Governor Patrick shared the podium with the Boston Bruins Andrew Ference to speak about innovation of green technology in Massachusetts.

"You are what you do, not what you say," Ference said during his talk about reducing carbon footprints.

"So whether that's composting at home, recycling, riding the T, or talking at things like this," the defenseman said, "I would like my actions to speak a little bit louder."

Ference and the Governor toured Boston's ‘Innovation District' to get a look at green technology being developed in the Commonwealth.

"We traveled over to Green Town Labs and met some brilliant minds; some people whose ideas and innovations are literally game-changers," Ference explained. "I have a ton of respect for innovators like this who speak loudly through their actions."

Governor Patrick was also pleased with what he sees in his state and in Massachusetts companies like FastCap.

FastCap Systems is, according to its website, a Boston-based company that has spent the last six years developing ultra capacitors, or "ultracaps" that can "charge via regenerative breaking."

"FastCap is using domestically abundant raw materials to drive down the cost of electric and hybrid vehicles," Patrick said.

These could deliver significant fuel savings for Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

Ference, who regularly drives an energy-efficient Fisker, knows all about HEV's.

"It's an electric vehicle with gas extended range," Ference said. "Basically, my first fifty miles is purely electric...which adds up to currently 97 miles per gallon after my first couple thousand miles.

"That's the innovation, that's the technology that's out there."

And Governor Patrick is ecstatic about Massachusetts being a site of environmental progress and innovation.

"Today in Massachusetts we lead the nation in energy efficiency," Patrick said. "We've seen dramatic increases in the amount of renewable energy produced here in the Commonwealth."

Ference leads the NHLPA's Carbon Neutral Challenge, a movement to offset carbon emissions produced through hockey related travel across the league.

Because of Massachusetts' place at the forefront of green innovation, his tenure here in Boston has been a good fit on and off the ice.

"I've learned a ton and it really makes me proud to be a resident here," Ference said of his home base in Massachusetts. "It's made myself and my family really want to stay after hockey and make this home."
