Off-ice with Andrew Ference

BostonBruins.com – Like all of his teammates, Andrew Ference wishes he were still on skates.

However, the B's veteran defenseman is making the most of his time away from the ice and stopped by to tell BostonBruins.com what his summer has in store.

“Lots of dad stuff,” was how he described his plans in contrast to last year's summer of Stanley.

Ference spent last summer celebrating his first Stanley Cup victory and during his memorable day with the trophy, he brought it to Spaulding Rehab Hospital and paraded it around the North End.

The B’s blueliner said last year’s festivities made this year’s early elimination tougher to take.

“It does seem so recent that we went through it, and all of the emotions are pretty fresh,” Ference said. “I think in a sense it makes it a little worse since you know what you’re missing out on.”

Ference admitted he has a hard time watching other teams compete for the Cup, but that last year’s win gave him a new appreciation for those that make it to the final round.

“Honestly I have a lot more respect for the guys that are going through it,” he said. “Especially watching LA you see how hard they’re working and the type of game they’re playing.”

The veteran knows how important it is to stay in shape during the offseason and Ference said he enjoys experimenting with different types of training.

“I’m able to get away from the hockey-specific stuff for the first month or so,” Ference said. “Right now, I’m doing some Krav Maga with some great trainers up in Malden, and I’ve got a triathlon coming up down in Marlborough.”

When he isn’t working out, the father-of-two simply welcomes the opportunity to spend more time with his family.

“It’s great to do some things with the kids’ schools, and some different things around the city that I haven’t really had time for,” he said.

His latest adventure? Adding to the tattoo on his back.

“It’s kind of a work in progress,” Ference said with a laugh. “I guess that’s what happens when you lose out early, and you’ve got so much free time on your hands.”

He said the tattoo features west-coast native artwork, which most people would recognize from totem poles.

“It’s just kind of 'artsy-fartsy stuff but it’s a lot of fun,” Ference said. “I’ve got the girls’ names on my back. My one daughter Ava, I call her Ava-bird, so I got a bunch of birds.”

Fans can see for themselves on Ference’s new Twitter (@Ferknuckle). He recently joined the site, and posted pictures of the progress.

Ference's tattoo's are pretty well known around New England, but the defenseman is also well known for his environmental efforts. He spearheaded the NHLPA Carbon Neutral Challenge, where players invest in renewable energy to offset hockey-related carbon emissions and hopes to talk to his new followers about his green efforts.

“I never really understood that much about using it,” Ference said of Twitter. “But I’ll start doing stuff about composting and drive everybody nuts.”

“It’ll be a lot of fun.”
