Seguin's Summer in Full Swing
No. 19 recovering from hand surgery, eager to begin training
BostonBruins.com – Boston Bruins forward Tyler Seguin has a big agenda planned for the offseason, with his major focus centered on strengthening his core.
At 20 years old, Seguin became the youngest player in team history to lead the club's regular season scoring with 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists) in his sophomore season. That said, he acknowledged that there's still work to be done in the off-season.
"I think going into last year, it was a bit of a short summer for us," Seguin said. "But we're having a full summer this year and I can really work on the things I need to improve on. My number one thing is my core strength – which basically comes with battling in corners and if I can continue to work on that I'm only going to get stronger."
However, before Seguin can begin training he has to recover from the surgery he had to repair a tendon in his hand.
"A few days after our season ended I ended up getting surgery on my hand," Seguin said. "I hurt it back in March when we were in Florida and the tendon came out of it's socket and I got that fixed, and finally got the cast off after two weeks and now I'm just walking around in a splint."
According to Seguin, it will take 10 weeks for the full recovery process.
"Right now, I'm not doing any work," Seguin said. "I just got the stitches removed yesterday – that's why I'm back in town – and hopefully in the next couple weeks I can start moving it a bit more and hopefully after that I'll be able to lift weights."
In the meantime, the Bruins forward spent about a week at home in Toronto before returning to Boston.
Seguin said that he's been in touch with his teammates, and he recently met with goaltender Tuukka Rask for dinner.
"A lot of guys went away for a few days and got some rest," Seguin said. "It seems like everyone's starting their summer and I am as well."
However, Seguin is eager for the season to start up again.
Asked if he was looking forward to September?
"Very much so," he said.
