Four Bruins Continue to Play

BostonBruins.com - If you are anything like me, you're having just a little bit of trouble watching the NHL playoffs.

However, there are some bright spots for Boston's hockey fans as they try to enjoy the springtime while wearing their Black & Gold on the beach, boat or golf course as two key players on the Bruins NHL roster and two B's prospects are still playing.

Chara & Slovakia

We'll start with the IIHF World Hockey Championships where defenseman Zdeno Chara, center David Krejci and goaltending prospect Lars Volden are all representing their countries in hockey's annual non-Stanley right of spring.

Held this summer in Finland & Sweden, the 2012 World Championship features many of hockey's best players (not playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs) in a tournament format.

Teams including the United States, Canada, Chara's Slovakia, Krejci's Czech Republic and Volden's Norway compete in a 16-team tournament similar to ice hockey's Olympic competition.

Thus far, all three members of the Bruins organization are in position to continue their hockey season. The Czechs, Slovaks and Norwegians all stand in the top four of their respective groups and could move on to the quarterfinals later this month.

A little closer to home in North America, forward Jared Knight and his London Knights (OHL) will compete in the Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup.

Knight's club defeated fellow B's prospect Dougie Hamilton's Niagara IceDogs 2-1 on Saturday evening to win the OHL championship and advance.

Knight, who has missed time because of an ankle injury, hopes the time between series will put him in good stead going forward.

"I hated to be out of the lineup Friday for what was going to be my last home game in London after playing major junior there four years, " said Knight (who has a 4-4-8 line through 15 playoffs games) to the Battle Creek Enquirer.

"But now, I'll get that chance to rest the ankle and be as close to 100 percent for the Memorial Cup. Winning this playoff title and now heading to the Cup — it's what I've been dreaming about since I got here."

While Knight should return to action this weekend, Chara's Slovakian squad will take on France and Krejci's Czechs will play Germany on Tuesday.

Thus far, Krejci has a 1-1-2 line in six games at the Championship, while Chara has 0-1-1 totals and is a plus-3 through six contests.

Volden has dressed mostly as Norway's backup, but performed well versus Russia and made 42 saves in his one appearance. He stands 0-1-0 with a .913 save percentage and a 4.00 goals against average.
