But Boston couldn't muster a second score

Pouliot Put the B\'s in Position
BOSTON, MA -- When the B's look to video in order to look for a solution to their offensive slow down in Games 1 & 2 of their Round 1 series against the Washington Capitals, their lone goal on Saturday could certainly point them in the right direction.

Center Chris Kelly's trio, which includes right wing Brian Rolston and left wing Benoit Pouliot, created the B's third period, game-tying goal by skating hard into the Capitals zone and shrugging off a couple of checks.

Rolston skated free and put a shot into Washington defenseman Jeff Schultz. Pouliot then won a race to the loose puck, chipped it backhand over Caps goalie Braden Holtby (43 saves) and collided hard with the netminder as the puck went into the goal.

"I think [Braden Holtby] tried to pokecheck, too, at the same time and I took a whack at it and it ended up in the net," said Pouliot of the rookie netminder's aggressive move to the puck. "Sometimes just put the puck [on goal] or whack at it – you never know what’s going to happen and it ended up pretty good."

While Pouliot talked about the goal a-matter-of-factually, the play was best described as Bruins hockey - a style that the B's weren't able to make fashionable in Game 2.

"At this stage of the year, you would like to see more net-front traffic, and you would like to see that puck going to the net a little bit more with guys heading in that direction," said Head Coach Claude Julien during his postgame comments. "We don’t have a good enough commitment in that area right now to win hockey games."

No longer a newcomer to the Black & Gold, Pouliot said the same things as his coach when he spoke to the press from the B's locker room.

"I’m sure we’ll talk about a lot of stuff, but we’ve just got to get back to what we’re good at," said Pouliot. "Score a little more, but at the same time just use our size, use our strength.

"Like I said earlier we’re a big team and if we can do that and play [solid] in our zone we’ll be fine."

But that's easier said than done against the new-look Caps.

"Yeah, they always have four or five guys that are in the neutral zone; it’s tough to get in their zone," said Pouliot. "One thing we didn’t really do that well today is put the puck deep and work in their end but we’ll figure it out next game."

The Bruins will have to figure it out quickly. Game 3 is Monday night in what will certainly be a hostile environment in Washington, DC.

"I think we’re in good shape," said Pouliot when asked about the fatigue factor, which might come into play after two games and three overtime periods. "We’ve been doing it all year."

And if the B's return to some of the other things they've been doing all year -- mixing defensive responsibility with physical play and a potent offensive attack -- Pouliot thinks Boston will come out on top.

"We need more [traffic]," said Pouliot. "I think we’ve some of the biggest guys in the league on our team - we’re a big team.

"Any goalie, I think, who’s got traffic in front of him it’s always tough to stop a puck, so we’ve just got to do that the next couple of games."
