BOSTON, MA – The Bruins announced their regular season award winners before the Bruins/Sabres game on Saturday, April 7. Zdeno Chara was the recipient of the Eddie Shore Award (exceptional hustle and determination, chosen by the “Gallery Gods”); Brad Marchand took home both the Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy (outstanding performance during home games, voted by Boston media) and the John P. Bucyk Award (greatest off-ice charitable contributions, chosen by John Bucyk); and Tim Thomas (First Star), Patrice Bergeron (Second Star) and Milan Lucic (Third Star) were named the Bruins Three Stars (top performers at home over the course of the season, chosen by 98.5 The Sports Hub).

Eddie Shore Award:
The team’s captain, Chara once again led the team in time on ice, logging 25:02 per game during the regular season. He established a career high in points this year (52) and ranks sixth overall on the team in scoring. Matched up against the opposition’s top line each night, Chara has registered a +33 rating, which ranks second in the league behind teammate Patrice Bergeron.

Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy and John P. Bucyk Award:
Marchand tallied a team-high 17 goals at home this season to go along with 13 assists for 30 points. The 2011-12 season marked the first full year of his community service initiative, “Brad’s Brigade.” Through this program, hospitalized children and children in need are able to attend Bruins games and meet Marchand. He also participated in a number of team organized charitable appearances throughout the Greater Boston area this season.

Bruins Three Stars:
Thomas compiled a 15-10-1 record at home this season and one shutout while Bergeron recorded 28 points in the TD Garden on eight goals and 20 assists. The team’s Third Star, Milan Lucic, notched 13 goals at home and 31 points, both of which ranked second overall on the team.

Boston Bruins Foundation and Professional Hockey Writers Association Donation:
The Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) made a $25,000 donation that will be divided and given to Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) and Raising A Reader Massachusetts.

Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached, Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Massachusetts also provides athletes with ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics Athletes and the community.

Raising A Reader Massachusetts’ mission is to give every child an equal opportunity for achievement by engaging parents from low-income communities in a routine of daily book sharing with their children from birth through age five. The early literacy skills development that Raising A Reader MA promotes is proven to affect school readiness, academic performance and lifetime achievement for children. Raising A Reader MA directly addresses this need, working with over 8,500 children ages zero through five across the Commonwealth and over 200,000 children nationwide.

The Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the PHWA partnered on a program to raise money for local charities by asking the working media who cover Bruins home games to make a small donation when dining in the Will McDonough Press Room prior to games.

Through the program, those members of the media who dined in the Press Room were asked to make an $8.00 donation, 100 percent of which went to the Boston Bruins Foundation. Over the past four seasons, the Foundation collected $75,000 worth of donations.

The 2011-12 Boston Bruins season is presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery.
