Don't Call it a Playoff Preview

Julien won't talk about the first round until the B's opponent is confirmed

Don\'t Call it a Playoff Preview
OTTAWA, Ontario -- It was one of those days where B's Head Coach Claude Julien just didn't have much to share during his pregame comments to the media prior to the Bruins matchup with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

But what the Ottawa area-native did say spoke volumes, as the B's bench boss forcefully tamped down any playoff preview talk.

"Well, it’s not a playoff preview because nothing’s confirmed yet," said Coach Julien. "So we’re not looking at it like that."

However, the Bruins aren't looking at tonight's contest as any sort of exhibition match, either.

"The one thing I can tell you is you don’t play in this league just by showing up," said Julien. "You come with a purpose, and our purpose is to play the best hockey we can and play to win.

"That’s what we’re doing tonight."

And that's so even without center Patrice Bergeron, defenseman Zdeno Chara and goaltender Tim Thomas in Ontario.

The veteran trio stayed behind in Boston to get an extra measure of rest before the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"There’s no big deal there," said Julien. "I think it’s been a long year and they deserve it.

"So it’s as simple as that."

Julien's explanation of defenseman Johnny Boychuk's injury, suffered when he collided with Pittsburgh's Aaron Asham on Tuesday, was pretty simple, too.

"Johnny’s just [got] a mild knee sprain," he said. "Day-to-day.

"It’s good news."

And when asked again about any extra meaning to tonight's tilt given the probability of the B's facing the Sens in the first round, Julien said, "What I told our guys, is we don’t talk about speculations.

"I won’t get into that until it’s confirmed," emphasized the coach. "So, maybe after the game tonight it might be a different story, but right now I don’t want to speculate.

"I’m not even wasting my time at worrying about that until we know for sure who we’re going to play.

"Right now, we have a game to play tonight against a possible opponent, but they’re not confirmed yet."
