Turco Reflects On Bruins Campaign
BOSTON, MA – The Bruins 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins last night was far from pretty, but there were some positives to build on according to goaltender Marty Turco.

“There’s a lot to be taken from this game,” Turco said. “These guys, you know, they battle to be down twice like that and even though we went down 5-2 in the third, there was no give up in this bunch. And that’s, I think that’s a huge thing for these guys to build on.”

As the Bruins head into the playoffs, the aforementioned resiliency will be crucial while the other 15 playoff teams try to dethrone the Stanley Cup Champions.

However, when the Black & Gold embark on their title defense, they’ll be doing so without Turco, who is ineligible to play because he was added to the team after the league’s Feb. 27 trade deadline.

Turco was playing for the EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian First division, and when they were eliminated from the playoffs, the Bruins signed him on March 5.

“It’s been tremendous, really,” Turco said. “I’ve been around for a bit; can’t say that disappointments have been much a part of my time here. I’ve been fortunate to have an opportunity and I’m truly grateful, for my family and I, for [what] the Boston Bruins gave me when things seemed pretty bleak.

“You want to play great and you want to show them, never mind anyone else, and for the most part – days, game and practice, and being a good team man – I’ve felt pretty proud of my time here so far.

"Between Tampa and a little bit tonight, those two games – part of them anyway – are pretty disappointing but at the end of the day I’ll continue to hold my head high like I have all year to be ready in this position and still want to play some.”

Turco made 22 saves against the Penguins last night in his fifth appearance with the Bruins.

His first ice time with the B’s came in the form of a 40-minute relief effort against the Penguins March 11, and on March 13 he made his first start against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Turco let up three goals before being pulled, but then reentered the game in the second period.

“After the Tampa game, I’m sure everyone scratched their head and second guessed,” Turco said. “It’s just human nature.”

But the Bruins veteran goaltender bounced back and won his next two starts against the Anaheim Ducks and the New York Islanders before playing last night against Pittsburgh.

Although the regular season is coming to a close with just two games left and Turco’s campaign with the Bruins will be over, he aid he took great pleasure in the role he had with the team.

“You want to have some sense of validation to this group and the players and coaches,” Turco said. “I mean that’s the thing that really eats at me when I lay down at night is, you know, what can I do for my teammates?”

“And, you know, work like a dog like I could to not only give these guys ample good goaltending in practice, right to the end for guys that weren’t playing or wanted to stay out late.

"I cherished that role for many reasons and it’s been an interesting year, to say the least. It would have been nice to win this one tonight but no matter what, being a Boston Bruin [and] a part of this group, I’ll be going out on a high no matter what.”
