BostonBruins.com – Zdeno Chara notched his 40th assist of the season during Sunday night's 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers and capped off the week by being named the NHL's 2nd Star.
"Well, it’s nice to win the division, it’s sort of a nice accomplishment," said Chara postgame. "Obviously, we want to be at the best in our division, so it’s a nice feeling but at the same time we still want to finish strong and get ready for the playoffs."
Chara tied for the NHL's weekly lead with seven assists as the Bruins (47-28-4, 98 points) earned seven out of eight points to clinch their third Northeast Division title in the last four seasons and the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Bruins captain earned three helpers in a 5-2 victory against the Lightning March 27, added another in a 3-2 shootout loss versus the Capitals March 29, and notched two assists in a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders March 31 on Saturday in addition to his work versus the Rangers on Sunday.
"It’s a potential [playoff] matchup, you never know who you’re going to end up playing down the road," said Chara of the B's important win over New York. "It was a very close game, a lot of battles, a lot of physical plays and it was a close game.
"It came down to scoring the extra goal, so it was nice we got the win – especially on the road.
"Now, we’re going to have two home games, and one on the road for the rest of the regular season," he said.
Chara has already established career highs in points (52) and assists, but could add to those numbers as the B's close out their regular season schedule.
"Yeah, I mean you don’t change anything," said Chara. "You still play hard, you still compete. You don’t let up because you clinched second place and I think it’s important we approach the rest of the games the same way."
