Krug Settles in at Bruins A.M. Skate
BostonBruins.com – It’s been a wild turn of events for newly acquired Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug.

Just a few days ago, the former Michigan State University junior blueliner was studying for an exam. This morning, he was taking notes inside the Boston Bruins special teams’ meeting as he prepared for the morning skate.

“It’s awesome, the last few days have been a whirlwind – that’s for sure,” Krug said, who signed a three-year Entry Level contract Saturday. “It’s been an awesome couple of days, and I’m looking forward to an awesome couple of weeks.”

With just seven games remaining in the regular season, Krug is looking forward to the opportunity to test the NHL waters. But he also knows that while he’s here, even if he doesn’t play, the experience will be beneficial.

“I’m just trying to get my feet wet and get a little experience,” Krug said. “At the same time, I hope I can push the guys in practice and do whatever I can do to help the team win.

“Obviously, the coaches will make that decision [to play], but I’m here and my goal is to compete and work 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.”

Boston Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien embraced the opportunity to welcome the 20-year old defenseman, and after the morning skate he addressed his plans for Krug moving forward.

“He came in early this morning, I had a real good chat with him and he’s a real good individual – you can tell right away,” Julien. “Tomorrow he’ll get a chance for a full practice with us and we’ll see where we go from there.

"Certainly not going to tell you right now that he’s not going to play, but we may give him an opportunity – depends on how everything goes. But the one thing he gets to do is experience the, I guess the level of competition here at the NHL.”

Krug, who is a dynamic, two-way defenseman, idolizes a lot of the NHL’s best players. Rather than looking up to one skater, he said he molds his game after guys like Nicklas Lidstrom, Zdeno Chara and John-Michael Liles – a former MSU Spartan.

But there’s one particular member of the NHL – a man inside the Bruins organization that Krug is excited to work with.

“I hope I can use [Boston Bruins Assistant General Manager] Mr. Sweeney as a resource,” Krug said. “He’s part of the reason I came here. He was a smaller defenseman, he’s played in the league for a lot of years and over 1,000 games, so I hope I can use him as a resource.”

However, it didn’t go unnoticed that while Krug skated with the team today, he received some genuine guidance from his captain, too.

“He’s one of the first guys I talked to when I got here, he’s very welcoming,” Krug said. “We were just trying to get the X’s and O’s out there so it was good just to get out on the ice.

“I’m looking up very high,” the 5-foot-9 defenseman joked. “I don’t know if they built these lockers for him, but I can barely reach my helmet up top. It’s pretty funny.”
