Bruins Hang Tough in 4-2 Win
BostonBruins.com – Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien knows how difficult it is to stave off a hungry visiting team when deadlocked entering the third period.

“Every time where at home and a team is even with us after two periods, we know they’re just waiting for an opportunity to see us make a mistake and take advantage of it, and the pressure now comes on the home team,” Julien said.

Last night, the Bruins were that hungry road team.

Tied 1-1 with the Los Angeles Kings, the Bruins scored three third-period goals to take a 4-2 victory and bounce back from Thursday’s loss against the San Jose Sharks.

“It was a 1-1 hockey game and we decide to go out there, create that goal and hopefully put the pressure on them,” Julien said. “We got our legs as a team, and we were better in the second and we got better in the third. We got a two-goal lead in the third and that’s how it goes; that’s what you call a good road win.”

Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic snapped the tie 4:37 seconds into the final frame, and forward Chris Kelly followed with a score of his own a 1:19 later to build a two-goal cushion for the Black & Gold.

Kings forward Slava Voynov scored with 5:14 left to make it a 3-2 game, but the Bruins held on and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter with a second left to seal the victory.

The win was the Bruins (43-28-3) third in the last four games.

“We’ve been able to gain that killer instinct that’s so key to success, especially in the third period,” Lucic said. “We look forward and excited of the challenge in the third period and I think that’s why we’ve had success.”

The Bruins battled hard through a scoreless first period, and then attacked first when Patrice Bergeron scored a short-handed goal 5:18 into the second period.

Although Colin Fraser tied the game midway through the second period, the Bruins effort never waivered.

“I think a big difference for us was we responded more than anything,” Lucic said. “They came out just as hard as the Sharks did and played a real hard game, but we were at our heels and weren’t able to get ourselves going with the Sharks for some reason.

“Today, we were able to get that first shot and go with it. We did a good job I think in all three zones, and Timmy [Thomas] played great and it’s good to win this one.”

The Bruins veteran goaltender, who played in his 15th straight game, made 42 saves – including a flurry of attempts in the final seconds as the Kings tried to even up the score with the extra attacker.

Julien was impressed with his goaltender’s stops during the Kings last charge, but he also applauded the concentrated team effort in the victory.

“It was an exciting finish there, and our goaltender stands tall for us, but we still managed to go out there in the third to get us a two-goal lead which is a credit to the guys in front of him,” Julien said. “Again, exciting at the end but this is a hard earned two points and I think our guys deserved a lot of credit there.”
