The Boston Bruins Week Ahead
THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS:
“CUTS FOR A CAUSE”: On Wednesday, March 28, Bruins forward Shawn Thornton and members of the Boston Bruins are teaming up with 98.5 The Sports Hub to host the fifth annual “Cuts for a Cause” to benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. The event will take place from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m. at Royale (279 Tremont, Boston, MA 02116). Thornton and his teammates will have their heads shaved by auction winners on stage to show their support and raise money for children battling cancer.

PEVERLEY PROGRESSING: Injured forward Rich Peverley – who was injured during the Bruins/Habs game on February 15 – resumed skating on Wednesday, March 14. He spoke to reporters on Friday, March 16:

“First couple of days were kind of just getting back into it,” said Peverley. “Today was a little bit harder, a little longer and I felt pretty good on the ice. It’s just about taking gradual steps.”

MEDIA AVAILABILITY FOR SATURDAY: Select Bruins players will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m. while Head Coach Claude Julien will be available at 11:50 a.m. All availability will take place in the Bruins locker room hallway.

UPCOMING GAMES: The Bruins will return home from a three-game road trip in time for a St. Patrick’s Day matinee matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers at the TD Garden on Saturday, March 17th, set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Philadelphia ranks third in the Atlantic Division with 89 points, sitting just behind the Pittsburgh Penguins at 91 points and the NY Rangers at 95 points. During the Flyers last game against the Islanders, goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov etched his name into the Flyers' record books when he broke John Vanbiesbrouck's 12-year-old franchise record by upping his shutout streak to a 249:43.

The team will remain in Boston for another home contest at the TD Garden on Monday, March 19th against the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7:00 p.m. The Leafs are 2-7-1 in their last ten games.

Following the two-game homestand, the Bruins will head west for a three-game stint in California, kicking off the road trip with a game against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, March 22nd which will air at 10:30 p.m. The team will then travel south to Los Angeles where they will face the Kings on Saturday, March 24th at 9:00 p.m. To finish off their California road stretch, the B’s will head to Anaheim for an 8:00 p.m. contest against the Ducks, who sit at last place in the Pacific Division with 71 points.

All start times for the matchups are local.

Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley and Naoko Funayama will call all four games next week on NESN while the tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle all radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Start times for the upcoming games are as follows:

3/17 vs. PHI, 1:00 p.m. ET
3/19 vs. TOR, 7:00 p.m. ET
3/22 @ SJ, 10:30 p.m. ET
3/24 @ LA, 9:00 p.m. ET

ST. PATRICK’S DAY JERSEYS: The Boston Bruins limited edition St. Patrick's Day practice jersey is now on-sale at the Pro Shop located in TD Garden. The Kelly Green, Spoked-B jersey, which also features a shamrock on each shoulder, is available in adult sizes S-2XL. Bruins fans can purchase their limited edition practice jersey for $95, or $165 to have it customized with a personal name and number.

The Boston Bruins Foundation will be raffling off a Brad Marchand and Shawn Thornton limited edition St. Patrick's Day jersey. The jerseys will be autographed and worn by Marchand and Thornton during their pregame warmup on Saturday, March 17. The raffle will run from Thursday, March 8 through Wednesday, March 21 at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for the raffle can be purchased online at www.bruinsraffles.org for $5.00 per ticket, with the net proceeds benefiting the Boston Bruins Foundation.

In addition to the online raffle, the Boston Bruins Foundation will be hosting an in-game, silent auction on Saturday, March 17 and Monday, March 19. The St. Patrick's Day jerseys that will be auctioned on March 17 include Patrice Bergeron, Jordan Caron, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic, Tuukka Rask, Daniel Paille, Rich Peverley, Benoit Pouliot and Adam McQuaid. The jerseys of the March 19 auction include Gregory Campbell, Joe Corvo, Chris Kelly, Brian Rolston and Dennis Seidenberg.

The St. Patrick’s Day jerseys of Andrew Ference, David Krejci, Tyler Seguin and Tim Thomas will also be auctioned through NHL Auctions. For more information, visit NHL.com.

MDA NIGHT ON MONDAY: On Monday, March 19 the Boston Bruins are teaming up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Boston firefighters to "Fill the Boot" and collect money for the MDA beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the TD Garden concourses, and continuing throughout the Bruins/Maple Leafs game.

Earlier this season, Boston Bruins Adam McQuaid and Shawn Thornton participated in the MDA's 2012 Muscle Team dinner, where professional athletes put their muscle behind the search to find treatments for neuromuscular disease. While at the dinner, McQuaid and Thornton were each paired up with an MDA buddy. Their buddies, as well as a few special guests of the MDA, will be in attendance at the Bruins/Maple Leafs contest. Families will also be VIP guests of forward Patrice Bergeron through his “Patrice’s Pals” Program. They will take part in a variety of in-game fan experiences including bench assistants and high five the team as they take the ice.

BRUINS/RANGERS ON NBC SPORTS NETWORK: The Bruins/Rangers game on Sunday, April 1 has been flexed to the NBC Sports Network and will be played at 7:00 p.m. ET (original time was 3:00 p.m. ET).

BRUINS SIGN MORRISON: GM Peter Chiarelli announced Thursday that the club has signed Vancouver Giants goaltender Adam Morrison to an entry-level contract (Western Hockey League). Morrison will remain with the Giants through the end of their regular season and playoffs.

The 21-year-old Morrison – who was a 2009 draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers – has played in 56 WHL games split between the Saskatoon Blades and Vancouver Giants this season and compiled a 35-17-3 overall record with a 2.80 Goals Against Average, .900 Save Percentage and one shutout. The 2011-12 season is his fourth in the WHL and he has recorded a 78-38-10 career record with five shutouts.

119 AND COUNTING: Including the Bruins latest home game the Bruins have now sold out their last 119 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

A STAT YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…
Patrice Bergeron and Tyler Seguin rank first and second overall in the NHL’s plus/minus category at +31 and +28 respectively. A Bruin has finished as the NHL’s plus/minus leader in two of the last three seasons (Zdeno Chara, +33 in 2010-11 and David Krejci, +37 in 2008-09).

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK (TOTW): WEEI.com’s DJ Bean rallied this week to pick up his third win of the season and creep within one of the TOTW leaders. Although not everyone may fully understand the winning tweet, it was given high marks for its creativity and timeliness, given the recent start of the NCAA basketball tournament.

@DJ_Bean: “Bruins sign Vancouver Giants goalie Adam Morrison. Ummm, Tyrus Thomas and Brandon Roy were totally still on the board. Crazy Michael Jordan.”
