BostonBruins.com – Currently sitting in first place in the OHL's Western Conference, the London Knights are closing in on a stellar campaign, but there’s still more work to be done.

There’s just three games left in the regular season, and if the Knights win out they will be the only team in the league to reach the 50-win plateau.

Leading that effort is Boston Bruins prospect Jared Knight, who has 25 goals and 26 assists (51 points) in 49 games played.

Knight, who missed 10 games because of an upper body injury in January, has scored eight goals and eight assists in 19 games since returning to the ice.

“He’s back healthy, and really looking for a strong run,” Boston Bruins General Assistant Manager Don Sweeney said. "He’s part of a really good team in London – part of their offensive and their whole top grouping. I think if they stay healthy, they got a chance and he’s encouraged by that and has been a big part of their success this year."

Knight's best performance during that successful stretch came March 8 against the Guelph Storm, when he tallied two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory.

With that victory, the Knights (47-17-1, 95 points) clinched the Midwest Division – and two more wins in the final three games of the season will secure their top spot in the OHL.

After losing in the first round in the playoffs last year, the Knights are primed for a run at the J. Ross Robertson Cup, as well as the Memorial Cup – awarded to North America's junior hockey champions.

London has talented forwards Seth Griffith (45 goals, 40 assists) and Greg McKegg (31 goals, 44 assists), and Sweeney said that Knight’s veteran leadership can help the team go a long way.

“As the games go along, they become of more importance – I think that’s where Jared is going to shine,” Sweeney said. “His ability to play all types of the game and looking to score big goals – I think his leadership has been there for a number of years.”

Knight, who was drafted 32nd overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, is wrapping up his fourth season with London and will join the professional ranks next season, according to Sweeney.

“He’s still going to have to understand the speed of the game and going into those areas to execute a little bit quicker,” Sweeney said of the 20-year-old forward. “I think one of the best strengths of his game is driving to the net.

"He’s got courage, and conviction to go to those areas and he does it with consistency.”

When asked if Knight will start the season in Providence or Boston, Sweeney said both are a possibility.

“Physically, he’s very mature," said the B's assistant GM. "I think he has to, hopefully, carry a real strong, maybe Memorial Cup appearance into development camp, rookie camp, training camp – and we’ve had guys [like that] make our team.

"We tell all the guys, ‘If you’re good enough to push somebody out of the way, you’re good enough to play.”
