Turco Gives B\'s an Option
TAMPA BAY, FL -- It's always good to have options.

After Marty Turco performed admirably in his Bruins debut, a relief appearance in Sunday's 5-2 setback in Pittsburgh, the Black & Gold are now back to having two NHL-quality goalies to share the crease for the remainder of the regular season.

"He went in there first game in a long time at this level, I thought he did well," said Head Coach Claude Julien on Monday. "He battled well, he’s always been known as a great puck handler and I think that is going to help us along the way.

"He’s a fighter," added Julien. "I thought he gave us some life too. He talked to the guys a lot on the ice, and those kinds of things were good.

"We were kind of giving him a chance to find his timing and...we’ve been working hard with him since he got to us, and were just about to give him that opportunity and the door was open after they took that 3-0 lead.

"I just thought it was better for everybody else involved to put him in, give Timmy a break and maybe give our team some life."

That said, Turco didn't sound satisfied.

"I got scored on twice," said Turco of his performance. "You just want to give the guys an opportunity to win the game.

"But, you know, there was some positives I can take from that game.

"I got thrown in the fire pretty good there, but it helps -- you jump right in there and get back at it," he said.

And it sounds as if it won't be too long before he's back in the crease.

"The better Marty is, the more comfortable it’s going to be for all of us to do what we wanted to do with Tuukka [Rask] and Timmy [Thomas]," said Julien of his two-goalie strategy. "He played two periods, I didn’t mind the way he played and we'll see how things go as we move forward here.

"It’s a heavy schedule, and we’re going to have to lean on Marty so, we will see him.

"How much? The better he plays the more we’ll see him and that will be entirely up to how he plays from here on in."

Turco explained that his expectations are simple.

"I don’t expect to play, but I expect to work and earn it," said Turco. "Whenever I do get the first start, going out there with the mental preparation, get ready to battle and work and produce.

"And after that game, think about it, get better according to how I played and how I felt and what I need to work on. A lot of that will come [naturally]. I always play my best when I don’t think, turn the brain off and just go play. That’s why you put the work in practice to have those types of fundamentals, the muscle memory type stuff.

"I'd love to play as well as I can and get their confidence so Timmy can rest, and keep playing well [so] they're ready for the playoffs. But first things first, we’ll see what happens when I get in there," he said.

For now, however, Turco -- who is ineligible to play in the postseason -- is thrilled to be back in the NHL and part of the B's run up to the playoffs.

"I know exactly where I’m going to be for the next four weeks-ish," said Turco. "I’m pretty excited about it, but there's still a lot of work to do."
