Boston Bruins Week Ahead
THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS...

B’S WISH PATRIOTS GOOD LUCK IN SUPER BOWL XLVI: Head Coach Claude Julien and various Bruins players took the time to wish the New England Patriots good luck in the Super Bowl this Sunday. Check out the team’s video message (at right).

BIG WEEK IN THE COMMUNITY: Multiple Bruins players will be making appearances in the Greater Boston community on Monday and Thursday of next week. On Monday, David Krejci will stop by Riverdale Elementary School in Dedham as part the school’s Jump Rope for Heart program, Benoit Pouliot and Tuukka Rask will visit Tufts Medical Center in Boston’s cardiac unit to spend time with children hospitalized there, and Johnny Boychuk and Joe Corvo will host a one hour floor hockey clinic for the Special Olympics at the Jackson Mann Community Center in Allston.

On Thursday, Chris Kelly will visit the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown to participate in a game of Goalball, Zdeno Chara will visit the Cunningham School in Milton, who won last year’s PJ Drive by collecting the most pajamas of any school participating in the PJ Drive, and Steven Kampfer and Zach Hamill will host an on-ice hockey clinic at Simoni Rink in Cambridge, MA.

UPCOMING GAMES: The Bruins close out their three-game homestand on Saturday, February 4 when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 1:00 p.m. at the TD Garden. The Pens are 8-1-0 in their last nine games and have climbed to fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Following the game against Pittsburgh, the Bruins will travel to DC to face the Capitals on Super Bowl Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Black & Gold will head back to Boston before traveling to Buffalo for a 7:30 p.m. bout with the Sabres on Wednesday and then round out the week with their lone meeting of the season against the Nashville Predators on Saturday, February 11 at the TD Garden.

Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley and Naoko Funayama will call the two Saturday games on NESN while the NBC Sports Network will televise the games on Sunday against Washington and Wednesday against Buffalo. The tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle all radio duties. Start times for the games are as follows:

2/4 vs. PIT, 1:00 p.m. ET
2/5 at WSH, 12:30 p.m. ET
2/8 at BUF, 7:30 p.m. ET
2/11 vs. NSH, 1:00 p.m. ET

RADIO BROADCAST NOTE: Due to the Patriots playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Bruins/Capitals game will be moved to 100.7 FM WZLX.

110 AND COUNTING: Including the Bruins/Hurricanes game on Thursday, February 2 the Bruins have now sold out their last 110 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

CASINO NIGHT: The Boston Bruins Foundation will host the second "Boston Bruins Casino Night" on Sunday, February 12, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at The State Room (60 State Street, Boston, MA 02109). Bruins fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to play a variety of casino games with their favorite Bruins players. To purchase tickets or for additional information, email foundationevents@bostonbruins.com or call 617-624-1981.

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK (TOTW): The TOTW action heated up on Thursday night, but the late push from the press wasn’t enough to oust @BrianZechello, who held on for his first career ‘W’ after a tweet sent during the All-Star Skills Competition relay.

@BrianZechello: “Mini nets. That must have been what the net looked like for the Sedins last year in the Cup final”

And here are this week’s Honorable Mentions, in no particular order:

@TheBruinsBlog: “The attempts of @DJ_Bean to win TOTW tonight reminds me of Tim Wakefield going for 200 #pathetic”

@TheBruinsBlog: “Derek Joslin scratched for Hurricanes. Bruins fans demand refund.”

@DJ_Bean: “Lot of people telling me I sold out with easy Gronk TOTW. Listen, good bands need to put singles on their albums so they can make more albums.”

@ESPNJoeyMac: “My last TOTW came exactly one year ago today. It's sad, really. Bean's lid is distracting my ability to tweet effectively”

@HacksWithHaggs: “I’m going to put the unsolved mystery of why the Bruins can’t beat the Hurricanes up there w/ Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and Area 51”

2011-12 BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK LEADERBOARD
@GlobeFluto (Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe), 3 (Week 4, Week 5, Week 10)

MIDSEASON TOTW HARDWARE:
Here is a breakdown of the TOTW Trophy races as we hit the halfway point in the season:

HART (MOST VALUABLE): @GlobeFluto, @TheBruinsBlog and @DJ_Bean
Both Shinzawa and Kalman have been as consistent as they come this season, tied atop the TOTW leaderboard through 17 weeks and routinely placing in the honorable mention category. Both were pegged to contend for the TOTW title before the season began and thus far have lived up to their billing. Last year’s reigning champ @DJ_Bean has fought off the TOTW Cup hangover and is lurking one behind the leaders. He will likely be in the championship mix come the end of the season.

7TH PLAYER (PERFORMING ABOVE AND BEYOND EXPECTATIONS): @douglasflynn and @ScottIsaacs
Not many prognosticators had NESN.com’s @douglasflynn tied for the TOTW lead through 17 weeks at the beginning of the season. Nonetheless, he has emerged as a solid contributor that has been tweeting like a top liner. WCVB’s @ScottIsaacs was an intriguing pick heading into this year. No one could know for sure how he would he respond to what he felt was a major snub in the Eastern Conference Finals last year. He could have easily packed it in and faltered, but the exact opposite has happened and he is right in the mix.

LADY BYNG (EXHIBITING SPORTSMANSHIP AND GENTLEMANLY CONDUCT COMBINED WITH A HIGH STANDARD OF TWEETING ABILITY): @LoftusAtLedger, @NaokoFunayama, @kluedeke29 and @RochieWBZ
While heated back-and-forth arguments and chirps in the Twittersphere have become commonplace, this group has always stayed above the fray and exhibited the sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct that one would expect from the Lady Byng finalists. Providing entertaining, meaningful insight while not getting involved in virtual verbal spats with their fellow media members and fans, Loftus, Funayama, Luedeke and Roche play the game in an exemplary fashion.

CALDER (ROOKIE OF THE YEAR): @RealJackEdwards and @BrianZechello
NESN’s Jack Edwards and Brian Zechello may be new to the Twitter game this year but they are carrying themselves like multi-year veterans. The sky is the limit with these two and followers everywhere are excited about the skill-set and upside they possess.

SELKE (TOP TWO-WAY TWEETER): @RearAdBsBlog and @ToucherandRich
Few bridge the gap between sports commentary and lifestyle commentary better than Barstool Sports’ Brian McGonagle and 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich. Whether it be analyzing the latest Bruins game or talking about the hot button pop culture topic du’jour, followers can always count on @RearAdBsBlog and @ToucherandRich for entertaining insight on a wide variety of topics.

The award winners will be announced in the final Week Ahead at the end of the Bruins season.

NEXT BRUINS PROSPECT REPORT SENT OUT: Thursday, February 16, 2012

PREVIOUS PROSPECT REPORT SUMMARY: The Bruins Communications Staff sent out their sixth edition of the Boston Bruins Prospect Report on February 1. It can be viewed online at BostonBruins.com and on the Bruins Media Website. In addition to notes on all players in the Bruins system and features on Alexander Khokhlachev, Alexander Fallstrom and Kevan Miller, here are some of the other Prospect Report’s highlights (stats current as of 1/31/12):

P-BRUINS WITH POINTS IN FIVE STRAIGHT: Providence has climbed back to .500 at 20-20-5 after taking points in their last five games heading into the All-Star Break with a 4-0-1 mark.  The P-Bruins have been off since January 25 for the AHL All-Star break and will resume action on Friday, February 3 when they host the Springfield Falcons.

ARNIEL NETS TWO: In the P-Bruins’ January 22nd contest against the Springfield Falcons, forward Jamie Arniel scored his third and fourth goals of the season and  his first since January 7th. He scored early in the first period, giving his team momentum and a 2-0 lead after the 1st. Arniel scored again in the second, contributing to the P-Bruins 4-3 victory over Springfield.

GOTHBERG, FORCE WIN NINE STRAIGHT: Zane Gothberg won all nine games during Fargo’s recent nine game winning streak from December 30 – January 26. During the nine-game win streak Gothberg picked up two shutouts and surrendered just 13 goals. Fargo outscored their opposition during this stretch 43-13. After a sluggish start, the Force have surged to fourth place in the USHL’s Western Conference with a 19-15-3 record. Gothberg meanwhile ranks in the top four in the USHL in goaltender wins (4th, 15), save percentage (2nd, .914) and goals against average (3rd, 2.42).

TREMBLAY STREAKING: Clarkson Golden Knights forward Nick Tremblay has a six-game point streak in progress with four goals and six assists over that span. The streak began on 1/7 and has continued through 1/28. He tallied a career high four points during Clarkson’s 4-3 win over St. Lawrence on 1/21.

HAMILTON NEARS RETURN: Niagara IceDogs defenseman Dougie Hamilton has served seven games of a 10-game suspension for his hit on Sudbury’s Michael MacDonald back on January 13. Hamilton, who is expected to return Feb. 11 against Barrie, leads all OHL defensemen with 50 points (13-37=50).
