The Boston Bruins Week Ahead
THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS...

CHARA MAKES PLAYER ASSIGNMENTS FOR ALL-STAR SKILLS COMPETITION: After selecting his squad on Thursday at the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft, Zdeno Chara finalized his skills competition groupings on Friday. Chara will look to win his fifth hardest shot title in a row in the Hardest Shot Competition and he will also participate in the Skills Relay. For the full groupings, visit nhl.com

NHL NEWS FROM ALL-STAR: The NHL announced that the 2013 All-Star Game will be played in Columbus, OH while the 2012 NHL Awards show will take place in Las Vegas for the fourth straight year. This year’s show will be held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday, June 20.

ALL-STAR BROADCAST NOTE:
Saturday, January 28
Skills Competition, 7 p.m. ET (Televised on NBC Sports Network)

Sunday, January 29
NHL All-Star Game, 4 p.m. ET (Televised on NBC Sports Network)

UPCOMING GAMES: The Bruins return from the All-Star Break with three home games against Eastern Conference opponents. First up is Ottawa on Tuesday, January 31. The Sens currently rank second in the Northeast Division, four points behind the Bruins, although the Bruins have five games in hand. The Carolina Hurricanes visit Boston on Thursday, February 2. Despite being tied for the fewest points in the Eastern Conference, the Canes have defeated Boston in all three prior meetings this season. The three game homestand closes out with a matinee tilt against the Penguins on Saturday, February 4. Pittsburgh surged into the All-Star Break, having won seven in a row.

Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley will call all three games next week on NESN while the tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle the radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Start times for the games are as follows:

1/31 vs. OTT, 7:00 p.m. ET
2/2 vs. CAR, 7:00 p.m. ET
2/4 vs. PIT, 1:00 p.m. ET

FERENCE SUSPENSION: Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference will be eligible to return to the Bruins lineup on Thursday, February 2 following his three game suspension. He has served two games thus far (at Philadelphia and at Washington).

109 AND COUNTING: Including the Bruins/Rangers game on Saturday, January 21 the Bruins have now sold out their last 109 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

CASINO NIGHT: The Boston Bruins Foundation will host the second "Boston Bruins Casino Night" on Sunday, February 12, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at The State Room (60 State Street, Boston, MA 02109). Bruins fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to play a variety of casino games with their favorite Bruins players. To purchase tickets or for additional information, email foundationevents@bostonbruins.com or call 617-624-1981.

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK: Between suspensions, the White House visit and the All-Star Game there were some solid topics of conversation in the Boston media Twittersphere this week. WCVB’s Scott Isaccs emerged from the pack and picks up his second TOTW of the season, which came during the wait for the Tim Thomas statement regarding the White House visit on Facebook:

@ScottIsaacs: “No way this Thomas FB statement comes before 6:30. Waiting so long I'm now locked in a chat with my mother. Apparently I don't call enough”

And here are this week’s Honorable Mentions, in no particular order:

@TheBruinsBlog: “Roberto Luongo says it would have been easier for him to make it to the White House.”

@TheBruinsBlog “Brendan Shanahan suspended Ovechkin 3 games today. He also thanked Tim Thomas for the smokescreen #Bruins #Caps”

@GlobeFluto: “#Bruins visiting White House. Nathan Horton, Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley, Shawn Thornton not welcome. #rightwingconspiracy”

@GlobeFluto: “State of the Union tonight. Secret Service standing down. Cupcake after watching over Bruins.”

@DJ_Bean commenting on the delay on the Ference suspension: “Shanahan knows he can’t retroactively suspend someone, right? #theresagamein90minutes”

CAMPER NAMED AHL ALL STAR: Providence forward Carter Camper was the lone P-Bruin selected to represent his team at the AHL All-Star game on January 29th in Atlantic City, NJ. Camper is currently the leading scorer for the P-Bruins, tallying 23 points on the season. He scored his 9th goal of the season on the power play in a 4-1 winning effort vs. the Pirates on January 6th. Camper was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on April 7, 2011.

RIENDEAU BACK IN PROVIDENCE, CONTRIBUTES: In his second appearance in Providence after being recalled on January 14, Yannick Riendeau notched two goals on January 15th in Sunday’s contest against Springfield. Before his recall, Riendeau had racked up a ten-game point streak in Reading.

SPOONER DEALT TO SARNIA: Center Ryan Spooner was traded by the Kingston Frontenacs to the Sarnia Sting on January 5th  for the Sting's top draft pick last May, 16-year-old center Ryan Kujawinski. In his first game with his new club, Spooner collected two goals and one assist in a January 6 win for Sarnia over the Erie Otters. Then, in a rematch against his former Frontenacs on January 14th, Spooner and the Sting secured a 4-1 victory. Spooner himself tallied one point on the night, assisting on Sarnia’s third goal.

GOTHBERG NAMED USHL GOALIE OF THE WEEK ON 1/16: Zane Gothberg of the Fargo Force posted a 1.50 goals-against-average and .940 save percentage to lead the Force to a pair of victories over Tri-City during the weekend of 1/14 and was named the league’s Goalie of the Week.  He stopped 23 shots in Friday’s 8-1 victory and then made 24 saves in the 4-2 win on Saturday.  Gothberg has started each game during the current six-game win streak for the Force, posting a 1.65 GAA and .937 SV% over that span.  The 19-year-old from Thief River Falls, Minnesota has won nine of his last ten starts and is currently ranked fourth among USHL goaltenders with a 2.52 GAA and fifth with a .912 SV%.

CHUDINOV EARNS ALL-STAR NOD: Maxim Chudinov was named to the KHL’s All-Star game, which will be played on January 21 in Riga, Latvia. Chudinov has been climbing the KHL’s rankings for the past several weeks. As of January 16th, Chudinov is in a 3-way tie for 2nd place for points among defensemen with 29 on the season. He is also tied for 3rd place in assists (20) and ranks 4th in the KHL in goals among defensemen (9).
