Boston Bruins Week Ahead
THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS...

BRUINS WHITE HOUSE VISIT SET: On Monday, January 23rd, President Obama will welcome the six-time Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins to the White House to honor the team and their 2011 Stanley Cup victory.  Continuing his tradition of recognizing sports teams for their work off the ice, President Obama will highlight the Boston Bruins Foundation which has raised and donated more than $7 million to various charitable organizations in the six New England states.

RADIO BROADCAST NOTE: Due to scheduling conflict with the Patriots/Broncos playoff game, the Bruins/Hurricanes game on Saturday, January 14 can be heard on 100.7 WZLX. Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will have the call.

SAVVY’S SUITE: Starting Thursday, January 12 through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season, B’s forward Marc Savard will host a luxury suite at the TD Garden for pediatric patients at Children’s Hospital Boston with a focus on children suffering from the effects of head trauma from both a medical and psychological standpoint.

UPCOMING GAMES: Beginning Saturday, the Bruins have five games in their next eight days, four of which are on the road. The road trip begins with a visit to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, January 14. Carolina currently ranks 14th in the East, however the Canes have defeated the Bruins in their prior two meetings this season back in October. Following the game in Raleigh, the Bruins will head further south for back-to-back games against the Panthers and Lightning on Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17. The four game road trip concludes in New Jersey when the Bruins take on the Devils on Thursday, January 19.

Boston will face the Rangers for the first time this season on Saturday, January 21 in a matinee game at the TD Garden. The Rangers and Bruins currently rank first and second in the Eastern Conference as of Friday. Boston has surrendered the fewest goals against in the NHL while the Rangers have surrendered the second fewest.

Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley will call all five games next week on NESN while the tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle the radio duties. Due to a scheduling conflict with the Patriots/Broncos playoff game, Saturday night’s game against Carolina can be heard on 100.7 WZLX, while the other four can be heard on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Start times for the games are as follows:

01/14 at CAR, 7:00 p.m.
01/16 at FLA, 7:30 p.m.
01/17 at TB, 7:30 p.m.
01/19 at NJD, 7:00 p.m.
01/21 vs. NYR, 1:00 p.m.

THREE STATS YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…
1. The Bruins are the only team in the NHL without a rostered player who is a “minus” on the season. San Jose has one rostered player who is a minus while the Red Wings and Rangers each have two.
2. Only the Flyers have more 10+ goal scorers than the Bruins, who have seven (Philadelphia has eight). Benoit Pouliot is closing in on ten as he has eight goals on the season while Zdeno Chara, Rich Peverley and Daniel Paille all have seven.
3. Tuukka Rask and Tim Thomas each have goals against averages under 2.00, the only goaltending tandem in the league to do so.

CHARA, SEGUIN ADDED TO ALL-STAR TEAM: Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara and forward Tyler Seguin will join goaltender Tim Thomas and the Bruins coaching staff at the upcoming 2012 NHL All-Star game in Ottawa, ON.  Chara, now a six-time All Star, leads all Bruins defensemen in almost every offensive category, including goals (7), assists (19), points (26), time on ice (24:33), plus/minus (+28), power play goals (5) and shots (112).

Chara has won the last four Hardest Shot competitions at the NHL All-Star Skills Competitions. Last year, he broke his own Hardest Shot record with a 105.9 MPH blast in Raleigh, NC. This is Seguin’s first NHL All-Star selection, although he participated in last year’s All-Star festivities as a rookie. The 19-year-old is Boston’s leading scorer this season with 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 points. He also leads the NHL in plus/minus with a +33 rating.

108 AND COUNTING: Including the Bruins/Habs game on Thursday, January 12 the Bruins have now sold out their last 108 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

CASINO NIGHT: The Boston Bruins Foundation will host the second "Boston Bruins Casino Night" on Sunday, February 12, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at The State Room (60 State Street, Boston, MA 02109). Bruins fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to play a variety of casino games with their favorite Bruins players. To purchase tickets or for additional information, email foundationevents@bostonbruins.com or call 617-624-1981.

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK: Between the heated Bruins/Canucks rivalry on and off the ice, Marchand suspension, and Bruins/Habs game, there was no shortage of B’s related topics to tweet about in Week 14, which was probably the most competitive TOTW week to date. Nevertheless, the standings tighten up at the top, as NESN.com’s Doug Flynn collects his second of the season moves into a tie for second place, just one back of the leaders. Flynn’s winning tweet came during the Bruins/Habs game on Thursday, when Shawn Thornton got tangled up and exchanged words with Montreal’s Lars Eller:

@douglasflynn: “Thornton checking heights and weights on Eller to see if Tony Gallagher gives him the OK”

And here are this week’s Honorable Mentions, in no particular order:
@ESPNJoeyMac (Joe McDonald, ESPN Boston): “In fairness to anyone who has ever had any sort of connection with C. Schneider, Canucks are leaving free tickets at will call”

@ESPNJoeyMac: “Marchand just walked by on press level with three cups of popcorn. Hopefully he got it for free since he just forfeited a lot”

@TheBruinsBlog (Matt Kalman, TheBruinsBlog.net): “Hockey scrum Seinfeldism – Henrik Sedin = Costanza “I’m outta here!”

@TheBruinsBlog: “Jordan Caron recalled by Bruins. The Province of Quebec cheers in unison. #SpeaksFrench”

@DJ_Bean (DJ Bean, WEEI.com): “The Province finally took that Marchand report down. Geez, it only took them like XXXXXX minutes"

@GlobeEricWilbur (Eric Wilbur, Boston Globe): “Canucks beat Panthers, X-Y #provinceheadlines”

@TheRealJackEdwards (Jack Edwards, NESN): “Rask so cool it seems he won’t even need a postgame shower. No big deal, just saves a penalty shot.”

@BizJacobs (Biz Jacobs, InsideHockey): “How weird does that have to be? Punching one of your good friends right in the face #ThorntonsProblems”

@GlobeKPD (Kevin Paul Dupont, Boston Globe): “Ex-Hab Pouliot w/ 8th goal. Now tied with ex-teammates Plekanec, Gionta. All sharp objects being removed from Quebec.”

LAST BRUINS PROSPECT REPORT SENT OUT: Tuesday, January 3, 2012
NEXT BRUINS PROSPECT REPORT SENT OUT: Tuesday, January 17, 2012

PREVIOUS PROSPECT REPORT SUMMARY: The Bruins Communications Staff sent out their fourth edition of the Boston Bruins Prospect Report on January 2. It can be viewed online at BostonBruins.com and on the Bruins Media Website. In addition to notes on all players in the Bruins system and features on Zach McKelvie and Ryan Spooner, here are some of the other Prospect Report’s highlights (stats current as of 1/6/12):

CAMARA TRADED TO BARRIE COLTS: Forward Anthony Camara was traded Monday, January 2nd from the Saginaw Spirit to the OHL’s Barrie Colts. The Colts acquired Camara and defenseman Ryan O’Connor in the trade in exchange for forward Erick Locke, goaltender Clint Windsor and three second round picks. Camara had seven goals and 19 points so far this season for Saginaw to go along with 76 penalty minutes. The Bruins drafted Camara in the third round (81st overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

B’s PROSPECTS SHINE IN CORNELL VS. CLARKSON BATTLE: Brian Ferlin and Ben Sexton, both Bruins hopefuls, met on December 30th on Clarkson University’s campus where each player contributed two points in their team’s effort. Sexton scored twice that night, once on a power play in the 1st period, and again in the 3rd to put Clarkson within one, however Cornell went on to win the game 5-3. Ferlin assisted on the team’s first goal of the night, and notched a goal for himself in the 2nd period. The Big Red currently rank 13th in the nation in the latest US College Hockey poll, which was released on January 2.

RIENDEAU EN FUEGO: Reading’s Yannick Riendeau is currently riding a seven-game point streak with two goals and seven assists during this span. The streak began on December 16 in a 6-3 win over Wheeling. Riendeau – who was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on April 2, 2009 – is tied for second on the team in goals with eight and third in points with 24.

KNIGHT’S KNIGHTS STILL FIRST IN CHL POLL: The Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights still rank first overall in the latest Canadian Hockey League poll, with a 25-7-0-1 record. B’s draft pick Jared Knight ranks third on the team in scoring with 33 points on 17 goals and 16 assists and leads the team in plus/minus with a +22 rating. The weekly rankings of the Canadian Hockey League’s Top 10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.
