Bruins center Marc Savard, who has suffered from concussion problems the past two seasons, will have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup despite playing just 25 regular-season games last season and none in the playoffs during Boston's championship run.

General Manager Peter Chiarelli told reporters Monday that Savard will be immortalized on sports' most famous trophy despite failing to meet the minimum requirements of 41 regular-season games or at least one game in the Stanley Cup Final. The team petitioned to have Savard's name placed on the Cup along with defensemen Steven Kampfer and Shane Hnidy, but it appears only Savard will receive the special honor.

"Marc will be on the Cup," Chiarelli told reporters. "The other guys, Steve and Shane, I'm not so sure yet, but Marc will be on the Cup."

That gesture could be a special one, as Savard's career could be in jeopardy.

Savard had his 2009-10 regular season cut short due to a concussion, but returned for the playoffs. However, his symptoms returned during the offseason and kept him out of the lineup until Dec. 2, 2010. He was knocked out of the lineup less than two months later when he suffered another concussion.

Chiarelli has ruled Savard out for this season and doesn't think he'll ever play again.

"I've communicated with him, he's not in a good spot still," Chiarelli told reporters. "He's still having recurring headaches. He still has recurring post-concussion stuff. I don't really have a progress report. I know I've said before that he's not playing this year, and frankly I don't think he'll play again. That's my opinion. That's my layperson's opinion. Obviously he has to be checked by the doctors, but with all the information I've been given, that's the way I feel."
