BOSTON -- Earlier today, Shawn Thornton and 15 fellow Bruins raised $42,722.35 at the fourth annual "Cuts for a Cause" event at Ned Devine's in Boston.

Thornton gets his head shaved at the Fourth Annual "Cuts for a Cause" event.
Thornton, Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Andrew Ference, Shane Hnidy, Nathan Horton, Steve Kampfer, Chris Kelly, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Adam McQuaid, Daniel Paille, Rich Peverley, Tyler Seguin and Dennis Seidenberg had their heads shaved by auction winners to show their support and raise money for Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.

“It’s awesome, every year the turnout keeps getting bigger,” Thornton said. “I can’t say enough about my teammates, every one of them stepped up.

"If they didn’t get their head shaved, then they donated money to match the minimum bid.”

Bruins who did not participate donated $400 to the cause.

Thornton admitted that it took a little convincing to get defenseman Shane Hnidy to come to the event instead of just donating the money, as he had done in the past.

“[Hnidy] thinks he’s so good looking with that hair," joked Thornton. “I think he’s just afraid that it won’t grow back.”

“I was nervous about getting the head shaved but it was all worthwhile and it’s for such a great cause,” admitted Hnidy. “If it [grows back], if it doesn’t, whatever.”

Hnidy, like Thornton, was impressed with the contributions from his teammates and from the crowd of fans who bid to give haircuts or bought tickets for the event.

“It’s amazing to see a turnout like this," said Hnidy. "The fans are putting their money forward for such a great cause.”

The event was co-hosted by 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Fred "Toucher" Toettcher and Rich Shertenlieb of the Toucher & Rich show, who were instrumental in the haircut given by auction winner Kierstin Morse of Haverhill, who won the bid to shave Adam McQuaid's head.

However, McQuaid, who had been growing his hair out for some time in anticipation of Cuts for a Cause, did not actually have his head shaved like the rest of the participating Bruins.

Instead, Toucher and Rich, as well as the audience, encouraged Morse to shape McQuaid’s hair into a mullet.

“Well I thought that [shaving] was part of it. That’s what everyone else was doing,” McQuaid said with a smile. “Everyone kind of gave me a hard time when I said I was going to shave it, so I was just trying to keep everyone happy.”

After McQuaid’s haircut was unveiled, there was a large media scrum surrounding the blueliner, but when he was asked if he liked his new haircut, the rookie said he had not decided yet.

“Everyone else seemed to enjoy it,” McQuaid said. “It was a good cause, and everyone had a good time with it.”

The players weren’t the only ones getting their hair chopped off at Cuts for a Cause.

Toucher and Rich, as well as CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty, shed their hair for charity as well. Thornton appreciated the participation of the media members.

“It’s awesome. Every little bit helps. The more money we can raise, that’s better for the kids,” Thornton said.

All of the money raised at the event will be donated through the Boston Bruins Foundation and will benefit Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center's “Child Life Services Activities,"
“Shooting Stars" and "Very Important Brothers and Sisters" programs.
